Clinical Depression and Sports

Stop me if you probably heard this, but... I ended up crying tonight over a football game.
Again.
It can be silly to get upset or worked up over athletics, particularly if you're a fan and not actually being on the field of play, especially in the case of collegiate athletics, but I ended up dealing with another instance where Indiana University lost another bowl game and I wound up crying and becoming despondent over life cause they haven't won a bowl game since January of 1991.
Why do I root for Indiana University, despite not being a student or alumnus of said institution? I don't know when it started, but I suppose it was due to the fact that I live in Indiana, or that I liked the team colors as a kid, or it was the basketball program. But, one thing that is certain is... for decades, you didn't go to Indiana for the football.
For years, I was an awful Indiana fan. I supported the basketball team, the soccer team, and the baseball team, but sneered at the football team. Whenever they did poorly, I would call for the coach to be fired and justified how they always sucked. Whenever they were average... I would call for the coach to be fired and that we deserved better. I was even a horrible person once, yelling at one of the players on social media after we lost the Old Oaken Bucket.
Over a year ago, I finally realized why I was so antagonistic towards this program... I can never leave them, and I was always so mean to the program because I wanted the pain to hurt less. Whenever good things seemed to happen, that's when they would hurt me the most. We would always be close... so close, to defeating good teams, and instead have to sustain on enough moral victories to last many lifetimes. I stopped being harsh and accepted life for what it was, deciding to support them as best as I could.
Life as an IU football fan is a perpetual thunderstorm. We hold the all-time record for losses in the NCAA Division I level, the fewest Big Ten championships in football as far as original members go (Penn State has 4, with two outright, and even Chicago, who no longer are in Division I, have SEVEN) with a meager two, only one Rose Bowl trip, and the worst bowl winning percentage for any major program at 3-10 with today's loss. We haven't won a bowl game since the Gulf War, when we beat Baylor at the Copper Bowl. Indiana football is a very sad existence, and I thought we were making great progress this season, even with all the chaos, as we had our best ranking in program history.
Then the team gets smarmy about being snubbed from a major bowl game, and we lose to Ole Miss, and now a bunch of people are laughing at both the program and the fanbase for how we were feeling all season, and being someone who just wanted to finally feel like I was about to see something different with this program, I ended up feeling more of the same; heartache and disappointment.
So I cried.
Again.
I cried when we lost the Pinstripe Bowl and a kick wasn't contested.
I cried when we failed to compete against Utah at the Foster Farms Bowl.
I cried when we blew a lead and couldn't understand what an onside kick was in last year's Gator Bowl.
And I cried tonight.
My life is limited at the moment thanks to the pandemic and the medical issues my family is currently dealing with, so escapism is hard. I don't like many TV shows, and my hours at work are strict, so I don't know what I can do to replace sports. It's not that I watch sports for gambling; I don't believe in betting money... I just watch because I wanted to see if years of suffering would finally come to an end, and instead that suffering is now hurting me emotionally and mentally more and more.

#20 Ohio State at Purdue Betting Preview

Spread: Purdue -5.5 Total: O/U 133 Time/TV: 7:00 PM ET, Big Ten Network
The 20th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes put their perfect 5-0 record on the line when they open up conference play tonight against the Purdue Boilermakers, but they will need to do so tonight without their leading scorer E.J. Liddell, who will miss the game with mono.
While Ohio State enters tonight’s game with a perfect record, they’ve skated by with the 254th overall non-conference schedule. In their most recent action, the Buckeyes narrowly escaped an upset bid by Cleveland State with a 67-61 victory in a game they were favored by 23 in.
Ohio State did defeat Notre Dame 90-85 last Tuesday, by far their most impressive win of the young season, but they’ve yet to truly face a test this year.
Meanwhile, the Boilers are in a similar situation as their opponent tonight. While Purdue has performed well in games against better competition, they did fail each test with losses to Clemson and Miami, FL sandwiched in between wins over lesser competition. Purdue sits at 4-2 on the season with their most impressive win being a 77-64 victory at the hands of Liberty in the season opener.

Ohio State Players to Watch

Barring a last-minute change, the Buckeyes leading scorer E.J. Liddell will miss tonight’s action leaving Chris Holtmann to rely on his trio of formidable secondary players – Duane Washington (14.8 ppg, 38.2% 3PM), Justice Sueing (14.0 ppg, 40% 3PM), and CJ Walker (13.2 ppg).
Should Liddell miss tonight’s game, 6-8 frosh Zed Key is most likely to receive his minutes in the lineup, as the young forward chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes in their win over Cleveland State. When you take a look at the Purdue roster, you’ll quickly see why Key is (no pun intended) a major key to the Buckeyes scoring a big road win to kick off the conference slate.
As far as tempo goes, Ohio State plays at a very methodical pace. They won’t be confused for the Ohio State football team, they like to take their time running through their offense. They will attack the offensive glass (average one offensive rebound on 36% of their possessions) and are great at limiting mistakes (10th best NCAA). If there is an Achilles’ heel to be found that Purdue (and almost every other Buckeyes opponent) will try to exploit it’s their abysmal defense from three-point range, as teams are shooting at an eye-popping 40 percent clip from downtown (279th overall in NCAA), with a lot of those looks being uncontested.

Purdue Players to Watch

Remember when we mentioned that Ohio State’s Zed Key would be very important to tonight’s game?
Well, that’s because Matt Painter’s Boilermakers once again feature two imposing bigs on their frontcourt, and everything Purdue hopes to accomplish runs right through them.
Junior Trevion Williams is Purdue’s leading scorer (13.3 ppg) and rebounder (10.3) and is coming off of a dominant 30-point, 11 rebound night in the Boilers 80-68 win over Indiana State.
He’s joined in the frontcourt by one of the biggest Canadians you’ll ever see – 7-foot-4 freshman Zach Edey. The long-armed Edey is also averaging 13.3 points per contest while shooting a ridiculous 75 percent from the floor. It’s not that Edey is especially skilled, it’s just that he’s usually the tallest man on the floor by several inches.
If there’s a bugaboo in Edey’s game, however, it’s that he’s still figuring out how to play defense at the collegiate level. While Edey does average roughly one block per contest thus far, he’s had an especially difficult time staying out of foul trouble. As a result, Edey sees the floor for about 15 minutes per game. If he gets into foul trouble once again, that puts a lot of weight on the shoulders of their star forward Trevion Williams.
Where Ohio State could feel extra pressure comes from Purdue’s sharpshooting duo of Sasha Stefanovic (12.0 ppg) and Brandon Newman (9.2 ppg), as Stefanovic shoots a ridiculous 53 percent from three-point range while Newman chips in 41 percent three-point shooting. Considering the Buckeyes treat the perimeter like it’s coated in lava, this could be a major obstacle to the Bucks’ chances of success this evening.

Ohio State – Purdue Prediction

As of this writing, all indications are that Ohio State will once again be without leading scorer E.J. Liddell, but the Buckeyes still have plenty of firepower to light up the scoreboard.
On paper, this matchup looks to favor a Purdue side that’s played much better at home than away from East Lafayette, though that too will be put to the test in a fanless Mackey Arena.
I think the Boilermakers have the mismatches in their favor and ultimately eke out a close cover, but I believe the much safer play tonight is the over.
Prediction: Purdue 79, Ohio State 72 Best Bet: OVER 133

Bowl Matchups by Mascots

Hello cfb!
It's bowl season!!!
Here is my analysis of each bowl matchup if the teams' mascots/nicknames duked it out instead of the players. With so many abstract/fictional/nonsense team names, I'm going to use my best (or some other type of) judgement. Feel free to fight me over any of these. I'm going to use a solo version of the mascot where appropriate ("Wolf Pack" still get a bunch of wolves, etc)

Game 1 - New Mexico Bowl - Aggies vs Mean Green (Utah State vs North Texas)

Winner: Mean Green. Our first bowl game goes to "Mean Green," with the legendary DT crushing an old frail farmer. Even if the Aggie was a young strapping buck, I'm still taking Mean Joe. Mean Joe pounds the farmer 49-14.

Game 2 - Cure Bowl - Green Wave vs Ragin' Cajuns (Tulane vs ULM-Lafayette)

Winner: Ragin' Cajuns. I've seen a few bad storms hit the gulf coast, and those Cajuns always bounce back. They're resilient, and our lone Cajun spend the entire game bracing against the strong water. Eventually the storm subsides, and he walks into the endzone for the win.

Game 3 - Las Vegas Bowl - Bulldog vs Sun Devil (Fresno State vs Arizona State)

Winner: Sun Devils. Devils are sneaky and can like... do magic and shit. The devil turn the bulldog into a field mouse and waves his pitchfork while the ball flies around the field. He gets a bit too cocky in the 2nd quarter and accidentally pops the ball on his pitchfork. He vanishes and times ticks out as the butterfly tries to repeated fly into the new ball and push it. It doesn't work. 35-0 Sun Devil.

Game 4 - Camellia Bowl - Eagles vs Eagles (Eastern Michigan vs Georgia Southern)

Winner: Draw... They sit on opposite goal posts and stare at each other until the game is finally called so the refs can get some sleep.

Our

Game 5 - New Orleans Bowl - Mountaineers vs Blue Raiders (Appalachian State vs Middle Tennessee)

Winner: Mountaineers. The mountain man gets the ball first and scores while the blue raider kind of just stumbles around. A couple minutes after the game started, the raider drops to the field dead. The mountaineer tries to resuscitate him to no avail. Unfortunately, no one noticed the reason the raider was blue was because he was choking. The mountaineer tries to help out and comfort people because he's a good guy, and he still wins 7-0.

Game 6 - Boca Raton Bowl - Huskies vs Blazers (Northern Illinois vs UAB)

Winner: Huskies. The husky seems a bit nervous before the game, thinking he's about to face a scary dragon. When the representatives are called to the field, the husky notices some guy toss a jacket on the field. The husky easily scores a few TDs before the game is over. 21-0 huskies.

Game 7 - Frisco Bowl - Bobcats vs Aztecs (Ohio vs San Diego State)

Winner: In our first recreation of a traditional Roman gladiator match, we get a really exciting game. Bobcats are small, but they can burst out for 25-30 mph runs. It's tied at half 14-14. The Aztec is using the "kill your opponent" strategy, but finding the bobcat to be a bit elusive. Finally, in the 4th quarter, the bobcat scores to go down 34-35. While celebrating, the Aztec takes a cheap shot with his macuahuitl, injuring the cat. Unable to continue, the bobcat forfeits.

Game 8 - Gasparilla Bowl - Bulls vs Thundering Herd (South Florida vs Marshall)

Winner: Thundering Herd. A single bull vs. a herd of just about any animal would be a tough task. I'll stay true to Marshall's mascot and assume this is a herd of buffalo. The heard of buffalo easily distract and confuse the lone bull, dominating it 45-0 (don't ask how they got a field goal.)

Game 9 - Bahamas Bowl - Rockets vs Panthers (Toledo vs Florida International)

Winner: Panthers. In a stunning upset, the panther shocks the world! Rockets take quite a while to prep and launch, so the panther uses this time to score a couple touchdowns. Shortly into the 2nd quarter, the rocket finally takes off and everyone realizes what's about to happen. The panther and fans scramble to escape the stadium. Because I'm not mean, we'll let everyone live. The rocket crashes into the stadium and destroys everything, including itself. Unfortunately, that's not how you score in football. The game is over before halftime, the panther winning 14-0.

Game 10 - Potato Bowl - Cougars vs Broncos (BYU vs Western Michigan)

Winner: Cougars. In our first single mammal vs single mammal matchup, and one of the most highly anticipated bowl games thus far, the fans were in for a treat. Cougars are fairly small compared to broncos, but neither are good handling the ball. There's a bunch of gnashing of teeth and kicking of hooves. Both teams fight to end, but the cougar finally pulls away toward the end, as the bronco wasn't trained for the endurance battle. Cougars wins 35-28.

Game 11 - Birmingham Bowl - Tigers vs Demon Deacons (Memphis vs Wake Forest)

Winner: Demon Deacons. Even though he's dressed as a holy man, it's still a demon. He teases the tiger for the majority game, but never lets it get close. He's still a gentleman though, so he's not as rude as the previous demons in our list. 24-7 final.

Game 12 - Armed Forces Bowl - Cougars vs Black Knights (Houston vs Army)

Winner: Black Knights. . This game ends much close than many expected. The black knight attempts to play fair, and it almost costs him. His heavy armour leads to the cougar having the advantage on speed. It's still pretty easy for him to carry the ball though and swing his sword to scare off the cougar as needed. The black knights plays the TOP game, and squeaks out the win 21-14.

Game 13 - Dollar General Bowl - Bulls vs Trojans (Buffalo vs Troy)

Winner: Trojan. For the most part, warriofighter type humans will typically beat animals, and, and this game is no exception. The trojan is viscous and brutal and slays the bull in the first quarter. Taking no chances, he runs up the score 77-0.

Game 14 - Hawaii Bowl - Rainbow Warriors vs Bulldogs (Hawaii vs Louisiana Tech)

Winner: Hawaiian Warrior. I'm getting a bit drunk, and I'm not even halfway through. This game pretty much goes as expected. The rainbow warrior has a good heart and wouldn't kill a dog for no reason. He even lets the little puppy score a garbage time TD. 35-7.

Game 15 - First Responder Bowl - Broncos vs Eagles (Boise State vs Boston College)

Winner: Eagles. In our first mammal vs. bird (dubbed the Battle of the Classes), we see some unique techniques. Although smaller, the eagle is much more agile and aggressive. It executes its plan masterfully as it taunts and out-maneuvers the bronco. It forces multiple turnovers zigging and zagging through the slower bronco's thick body, proving that birds > mammals. 27-7.

Game 16 - Quick Lane Bowl - Yellow Jackets vs Golden Gophers (Georgia Tech vs Minnesota)

Winner: Gopher. The yellow jacket got off to a promising start, landing a couple stings on the gopher. The gopher realized it needed to better utilize its (under) ground attack better, and the ball wasn't seen again until there were 10 seconds left in the game. The gopher popped up from under the wasps's endzone and scored the game's only TD. 7-0.

Game 17 - Cheez-It Bowl - Horned Frogs vs Golden Bears (TCU vs California)

Winner: Golden Bears. This one isn't even close. The frog's only defensive mechanism was no match at all the bear's superior strength. Ignoring the blood, it squashes the poor frog on the first play. The bear marches into the endzone, then moves toward the crowd. No one saw the end of the game, but it was 7-0 and the frog was dead, so... 7-0.

Game 18 - Independence Bowl - Owls vs Blue Devils (Temple vs Duke)

Winner: Blue Devils. Wasting no time, the blue devil zaps the owl, turning it into a butterfly. A gust of wind blows the butterfly away from the stadium, and it spends the rest of the time trying to fly back to the field. The blue devil scores a single touchdown, then heads to the bleachers to hit on sorority girls. He's quite the devil ;) 7-0

Game 19 - Pinstripe Bowl - Hurricanes vs Badgers (Miami vs Wisconsin)

Winner: Hurricanes. Hurricanes are brutal and unforgiving. It demolishes the stadium at the very beginning, throwing the badger and fans in all directions. Fortunately it won the coin toss, so the ball crossing the goal line still counts. 7-0

Game 20 - Texas Bowl - Commodores vs Bears (Vanderbilt vs Baylor)

Winner: Bears. In a shocking upset, the bear wins this one. Unfortunately the commodore is pretty ineffective off his ship. Despite being in Houston, he couldn't find a way to bring the game to the sea. Despite the commodore's best attempts, the uncoordinated bear manages to win 28-21.

Game 21 - Music City Bowl - Tigers vs Boilermakers (Auburn vs Purdue)

Winner: Tigers. In another rare upset of animal over human, the tiger showed why it's the king of the jungle (lions don't live in jungles. Idk who came up with that). Despite being smart and probably good at... building boilers... this is (a version of) football. The boilermaker has no weapons and hid on the bench the entire game. Tiger managed to nudge a few balls over the goal-line for a 21-0 win.

Game 22 - Camping World Bowl - Mountaineers vs Orange (West Virginia vs Syracuse)

Winner: Mountaineers. In probably the most boring game thus far, the mountaineer walks out to shake the opponents hand and decides to just eat it. This mountaineer wasn't quite as nice as the last one, and he decides to run up the score a bit. He's also a bit clumsier than the last one and somehow gives up a safety. 49-2.

Game 23 - Alamo Bowl - Coyotes vs Cyclones (Washington State vs Iowa State)

Winner: Coyotes. This game plays out basically the exact same as the Hurricanes vs Badgers (minus some water.) Unfortunately for the cyclone, the coyote started with the ball. The cyclone scores the only goal on itself and loses 7-0.

Game 24 - Belk Bowl - Gamecocks vs Cavaliers (South Carolina vs Virginia)

Winner: Cavaliers. The cavalier is pissed because he heard "football" and assumed it was soccer. He chases down the bird and slaughters. He builds a fire and starts roasting it while discussing with the refs the rules of the of the game. The refs try to just convince the cavalier to pick up the ball and walk into the endzone, but he's scared to use his hands. It takes 4 overtimes for the bird to be done cooking and for the cavalier to finally agree to pick the ball up. He still dribbles the ball into the endzone with his feet, and reaches down to touch it. The refs call the game, and the 10 fans that stayed for some grilled pheasant cheer. 7-0

Game 25 - Arizona Bowl - Red Wolves vs Wolf Pack (Arkansas State vs Nevada)

Winner: Wolf Pack (but really everyone won this one). Wolves are super cool. The game starts and the wolf pack begins testing the red wolf. Even though he has no chance, the red wolf fights tooth and nail and the pack is impressed. At halftime, the pack invites the lone wolf to join its pack. He agrees and announces his mid-game transfer. With no opponent, the pack wins even though they were already winning 24-0.

Game 26 - Military Bowl - Wildcats vs Hokies (Cincinnati vs Virginia Tech)

Winner: Wildcats. There was a feeling of sick nostalgia (i'd imagine this is the same feeling I get when I smell Patron Citron?) in the stadium, but no one actually showed up for VT. The wildcat played with the ball a bit and managed to get a couple TDs. 14-0

Game 27 - Sun Bowl - Cardinal vs Panthers (Stanford vs Pittsburgh)

Winner: Panther. It's a color. Vegas didn't even accept bets on this game. The field was a deep shade of red, but for the second game in a row, the single player managed to "run unopposed." He was a bit better than the lynx though. 28-0.

Game 28 - Redbox Bowl - Ducks vs Spartans (Oregon vs Michigan State)

Winner: Spartans. Again, not even close. The spartan is focused and takes the game very seriously. The duck wanders around with no clue what's going on. Somewhere in the middle of the 3rd period, the duke accidentally got in the way of the spartan, who proceeded to slow-motion flip over the duck while slicing its beak off. Poor duck :(. Btw if you're actually reading this, pm me and I'll give you silver. Spartan wins 300-0.

Game 29 - Liberty Bowl - Tigers vs Cowboys (Missouri vs Oklahoma State)

Winner: Cowboys. Thankfully for OSU, they sent their best sharp-shooter. The tiger tried running straight for the cowboy before the game even started. The cowboy got off a perfect shot right between the eyes, dropping the wild cat from 30 yards out. The cowboy had work to do, so he scored a single TD and left the field. 7-0

Game 30 - Holiday Bowl - Utes vs Wildcats (Utah vs Northwestern)

Winner: Wildcats. A young boy wanders onto the field and the Leopard smacks his lips. He makes a bee-line straight for the kid and ferociously devours the little kid, avenging his previously slain brethren. The fans are in shock, and the leopard scores a touchdown before getting chased out of the stadium by fans of both teams. The NCAA holds an emergency meeting about the future of the sport, but decide the games are more important. No one knew who the kid was anyway. 7-0 Wildcats. You're kind of mean Northwestern.

Game 31 - Gator Bowl - Aggies vs Wolf Pack (Texas A&M vs NC State)

Winner: Wolf Pack. Leading the wolf packs to a 3-0 post-season record, the wolves make short work of the pitchfork-wielding farmer. Everyone already seems to have forgotten the previous week, and the wolves punch in a couple rushing tds. 14-0

Game 32 - Outback Bowl - Bulldogs vs Hawkeyes (Mississippi State vs Iowa)

Winner: Hawkeyes. He snipes the bulldog with ease and it's a super boring game. 21-0.

Game 33 - Citrus Bowl - Nittany Lions vs Wildcats (Penn State vs Kentucky)

Winner: Nittany Lions. The small basically housecat was super intimidated by the real wild cat. The Nittany Lion scored quick, and decided to take the full-grown wildcat back to her pride, thinking she was a baby "real lion." 7-0.

Game 34 - Peach Bowl - Gators vs Wolverines (Florida vs Michigan)

Winner: Gators. Despite being a miniature bear, gators are insanely powerful. On the first drive, the gator popped the ball. It still wandered into the endzone and laid down in the sunny Georgia weather. The wolverines and the refs were too scared to retrieve the ball from the gator, and time expired. 7-0.

Game 35 - Orange Bowl - Crimson Tide vs Sooners (Alabama vs Oklahoma)

Winner: Sooners. The sooner is completely unphased by a bit of red water, and proceeds to scored a few touchdowns before realizing this is a waste of time. He cuts out a little piece of sod and runs off the field. 21-0.

Game 36 - Cotton Bowl - Tigers vs Fighting Irish (Clemson vs Notre Dame)

Winner: Fighting Irish. In no surprise to anyone, the soldier with the gun manages to kill the cat early in the game. Most of these games are really just about the first 5 minutes. People just attend these events to see the initial bloodshed. 56-0.

Game 37 - Fiesta Bowl - Tigers vs Golden Knights (LSU vs UCF)

Winner: Golden Knights. This game literally plays out the exact same as the Army game. Literally every play is identical, every drive is identical. The media and fans throw out a ton of conspiracy theories, but it eventually dies down to a weird historical fact. 21-14

Game 38 - Rose Bowl - Buckeyes vs Huskies (Ohio State vs Washington)

Winner: Huskies. The husky doesn't even notice the lone little nut on the field. He plays with the ball for an hour. 21-0.

Game 39 - Sugar Bowl - Bulldogs vs Longhorns (Georgia vs Texas)

Winner: Bulldogs. Because Tuck Fexas. Just kidding, I'm not that petty. They actually lost because the bulldog (despite being a terrible breed of dog), was much quicker and agile than the huge cow. It was able to force several take-aways and ran laps around the out-of-shape massive horny boi. 28-7.

Game 40 - CFB Championship - Sooners vs Fighting Irish (Oklahoma vs Notre Dame)

Winner: Sooners. Our first and ONLY human vs human game. The sooner has a massive advantage with their wagon being a part of their identity. They're able to hide inside, and pop out for shots against the Irish soldier. Also, many soldiers in WWI were vastly under-trained, while the land-grabbers were survivalists and pioneers. Both men ignore the football, knowing the only way to win the game is knocking out their opponent. Both humans had agreed on no kill-shots, and the sooner manages to tag the arm of the Irish soldier in the arm in the 4th quarter. He waits until there's a few seconds left on the clock and walks the ball into the endzone. 7-0.

Summary

There really isn't any. It was fun and I definitely took some leisure in my interpretations of the team representatives, but if you actually read this, then thanks for the time. I really should get a girlfriend.

r/FloridaGators Tournament: AFL Matchups - Game 1

Hey Everyone! This is the Matchups and Arguments for all of the AFL Matchups. This is where the teams will argue to you why they should win against their opponent. Voting will open at 9pm Tonight!
Here is the hub post to the Florida Gators Tournament.

AFL Matchups

TebowTime VS Caught Red Hernandez

1. Team - Tebow Time

Offense - Depth Chart
Defense - Depth Chart

2. Why We Will Win

Before getting into why TebowTime will surely defeat Caught Red Hernandez, I would like to explain our team and why we chose some of our more notable selections.
The random drawing for the picks was in our favor and we recieved the first overall pick so there was no other option besides Tim Tebow, the most well-known player in Gator history and one of the most successful college athlete the University of Florida has ever seen, and he could even be considered the greatest college football player of all time His accolades and play speak for himself, as well as his off the field actions. During his time at Florida, in which he used all four years of eligibility, he not only was successful on the field (Heisman trophy, 2x SEC player of the year, 2x National champ, etc.), but he was a great example of leadership and character for the university. We knew he would be the perfect leader for our team, and the immediate choice for the number one overall pick.
Early in the draft, we had about 5 or 6 I had about 5 or 6 players, on my original draft board, that I really wanted to select early if they were there. After Tebow, one of the next highest guys on my board was Wes Chandler, a WR. This was a guy I had never heard of before this draft, but early into research I found out how much of a great player Chandler was. He was a two time All-American in the mid 70’s, named to the College Football Hall of Fame, and the number three overall pick in the 1978 NFL draft, leading to a successful NFL career. Besides being a great player, he showed leadership off the field, being named an Academic All-American, being awarded the Fergie Ferguson Award (Given "Senior football player who displays outstanding leadership, character and courage"), and having a coaching career after.
Lining up as well as Wide Receiver are Nat Moore (All SEC in 1972, led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 1977, and does a lot of charity work, being named NFL Man of the Year in 1984) and Tyrie Cleveland. Cleveland was a surprise pick in the 17th to many, due to him not having even close to the accolades as other players still available. Part of this is recency bias on my part, as well as an emotional aspect, due to 2017 Tennessee being my first ever Florida game and being a big part of why I love Gator football. He is also a great athlete and a great special teams player, as a punt gunner and even recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown last season.
To fill in our backfield, we selected Larry Smith in the 5th round, who was 3x First Team All-SEC and a All American in the late 60’s. He was also awarded the Fergie Ferguson Award.
For our FLEX position, we wanted someone who could line up basically anywhere on the field, whether it be in the backfield or another slot receiver. We wanted speed so we selected Brandon James, who could also be used as a returner if necessary (2x First Team All-American returner).
Our offensive line has just as many accolades as the rest of the team, with four out of the five being named First team All-American and the fifth being named Second Team. Tackle Mike Pearson was successful off the field during his time at Florida as well, being named to the SEC academic Honor Roll twice. Guard Shannon Snell owns a Sonny’s barbecue and supplies the food to the recruiting barbecue the last few years, so he’s at least partly responsible for a couple commits a year. Center Guy Dennis was an excellent leader, being awarded the Fergie Ferguson award in 1968. Guard John Barrow played both offensive and defensive line for the Gators and is considered one of the greatest CFL players of all team, being named to their hall of fame, and was even briefly a GM in the Great White North. Tackle David Williams was another All-SEC team captain that ended his career as a Gator as a first round pick in 1989.
With our pick at the end of the second round, we were lucky enough to select probably the best or second best defensive player to ever wear Orange and Blue, Linebacker Wilber Marshall, the second member of our team in the Ring of Honor. The 2x Consensus All-American was a threat to any opposing offense from 1980 to 1983. Lining up next to him are Sammy Green, another Consensus All-American, and Johnny Rutlege, a First and Second Team All-SEC selection that played for Spurrier in the late 90’s, winning a couple SEC titles and a national title. Averaging one Consensus All-American selection and 1.66666 (repeating, of course) First Team All-SEC selections a piece, this would probably be our strongest unit, if not for the Double-A All-Star at quarterback.
Our defensive line has two ends that I had my eye on from the start, Forest K. Ferguson and Dale Van Sickel. Both I had wanted, not just because of their football careers, which were extremely successful (Van Sickel is in the College Football Hall of Fame and Ferguson was First Team All-SEC), but for what they did after of football. Ferguson is the more well-known of the two. He joined the Army as an officer during World War II, earning the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions in June of 1944. He later died from his injuries suffered in the war and, shortly after, has an award given out to the senior captain that “displays outstanding leadership, character, and courage”. Van Sickel, after graduating from Florida, became a successful Hollywood stunt performer, even having a role in Spartacus.
Between these two Gator Legends, defensive tackles Gerard Warren, who had a successful career under Spurrier from 1998 to 2000 and being selecting with the number 3 overall pick in 2001, and William Gaines, who was First Team All-SEC in 1993, anchor the defense and will be successful stopping the run.
Our secondary, headlined by star corners Vernon Hargreaves II (2x First Team All-American and 3x All-SEC) and Fred Weary (Career interception leader at Florida, Consensus All-American, and 2x First Team All-SEC) is another strength of the team. Bruce Bennett, who played under our head coach, was an All-American and had a very successful CFL career, and Marquand Manuel, who has had a successful career coaching DBs and defenses, would succeed in coverage based off of their smart play. At head coach, we have Ray Graves, one of the more underrated coaches in Florida football history. He had a successful 10 year coaching career at Florida, winning 70 games and four bowl games, and was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990. He coached multiple of our players, including Larry Smith and Bruce Bennett, and coached other notable players like Steve Spurrier. He was also an innovator on the defensive side of the ball, as he is credited with creating the modern alignment of the free and strong safety. Besides being successful on the field, one of the things Graves succeeded at the best was making sure his players succeeded off the field as well, which was a big part of our plan in this draft. 93 percent of his players graduated with Bachelor’s degrees and more than half of them continued their education and received either law or medical degrees. Graves also served as the Athletic Director while coaching, and kept that job for ten years after he finished coaching.
The main reason I believe we will easily defeat Caught Red Hernandez is because of our spread offense, headed by probably the best spread college quarterback of all time, Tim Tebow. Tebow would be able to spread the ball around to “Gator Greats” Chandler and Larry Smith. Cleveland would force either Maye or Johnson to have to respect him as a deep threat, leaving other players open short. Our offensive line, whose job is made slightly easier by Tebow’s running ability, are no slouches either, with 4 First team All-Americans (and one second team) and 7 All-SEC nominations between them. Also, Shannon Snell would be able to distract Caught Red Hernandez’s defensive line with barbecue from the Sonny’s he owns (especially Polite, who showed up “fat and out of shape to the combine”, and Culpepper, who is probably starving after being on Survivor for like the seventh time). On the defensive side of the ball, Wilber Marshall and Sammy Green would command the middle of the field, while VH3 shuts down any receiver lined up against him. On the other side of the field, Fred Weary has a decent chance at intercepting any pass Shane Matthews throws his away. Bruce Bennett and Marquand Manuel, both excellent leaders, would be able to assist the linebackers and outside corners in coverage if necessary. Manuel, being a defensive coach now, would be able to lead the defense if necessary. Our defensive line, anchored on the outside by two older Gator legends, Forest K. Ferguson and Dale Van Sickel. Ferguson, being an Army officer after his playing career was over, is another player on the team with excellent leadership and discipline; Van Sickel, being a Hollywood stuntman, isn’t afraid to get hurt and can probably sell the hell out of a questionable hold. Anchoring the interior offensive line is the 330+ pound Gerard Warren, who would almost surely require a double team by the CRH interior offensive line, making it easier for Van Sickel, Ferguson, William Gaines, or a blitzing linebacker to the get the stop.
Because this is a big matchup and Caught Red Hernandez is coached by Bob Stoops, there will also likely be an appearance from “Big Game Bob”, making it easier for TebowTime to come out on top.
As we have probably the greatest offensive and defensive players (Tebow and Marshall) to ever suit up for Florida, plus the rest of our roster including quite a few legendary Gator players , I believe that TebowTime would be able to easily defeat Caught Red Hernandez. Also, besides picking players that excelled on the football field, we also tried to pick players that lived up to “The Gator Standard” of leadership and success off the field, with a few being award the Fergie Ferguson award and being successful in the classroom.
Also, our mascot, thehammerking, is definitely better than Zlat and can definitely beat him up.

2. Why We Will Win

Offense:
  • The spread can be either a run oriented offense or it can be pass oriented. Stoops, CRH's coach, has ran both and has shown that he can adjust to his players, seeing that DeMarco Murray was given plenty of carries in 2008.
  • Greatest RB in Gator history, 3x Super Bowl champ, Super Bowl MVP, 8x Pro Bowl, 4x First team All-Pro, NFL MVP, all time NFL leading rusher, and unanimous All-American Emmitt Smith would be a monster with this scheme.
  • Our OL is stacked. At tackle, we have Jason Odom, the only Gator OL to ever have been a unanimous All-American, and Kenyatta Walker, who was designated as the best lineman in the entire SEC in 2000. At guard, we have Jeff Zimmerman and Crawford Ker, who, among their All-American and All-SEC appearances, were 2/3 of the legendary linemen in the Great Wall of Florida, the greatest OL Florida's ever fielded. At center, we have Maurkice Pouncey, who is arguably the best Gator lineman to have ever played. 7 Pro Bowls (with more to come), consensus All-American, and a Rimington winner, he completes our monster OL.
  • Our starting WR is Chris Doering, who caught 31 TDs at Florida, an SEC record to this day. Following him is Antonio Callaway, who ran a 4.41 40. When defenses would come up to try to stop our monster OL and Emmitt Smith, Callaway would burn them deep, as we've seen before. We also have Travis McGriff, whose quickness in the slot fits perfectly into our spread offense, and was another product of Spurrier's Fun N Gun, along with Doering. Chris Rainey at FLEX is a mismatch machine. TT has no one on defense that can replicate Rainey's quickness when coming out of the backfield for a pass or running with the ball.
  • Our QB, Shane Matthews, was a 3x first team All-SEC selection and a 2x SEC PotY. He finished his college career having completed 722 of 1,202 attempts for 9,287 yards and seventy-four touchdowns, and was a team captain and the Gators' most valuable player during his final season.
Defense:
  • Our defensive tackles, Brad Culpepper and Trace Armstrong, might be the best defensive tackles the Gators have ever had. Culpepper was a consensus All-American and Trace Armstrong was a first team All-American (only playing 1 year for Florida) and Pro Bowler. Both were anchors in their respective dominant D-Lines and you will have a hard time running up the middle against them.
  • Jachai Polite and Jeremy Mincey were both monsters on the edge. Mincey would be the strong side DE to shore up runs and we've all seen what Polite can do on a pass rush.
  • Brandon Spikes was a TWO TIME consensus All-American. He and Wilber Marshall are the only Gator LBs with such accolades.
  • Andra Davis and Mike Peterson were both stud linebackers with All-American awards.
  • Janoris Jenkins is one of the best corners in our storied history at the position and has a Pro Bowl selection. He is alongside Dee Webb, who as a junior in 2005, led the SEC in passes defended and was a first team all-SEC selection. With 40 times of around 4.45 for both corners, no receivers have a chance at burning these guys in man coverage.
  • Todd Johnson was a monster strong safety that garnered multiple all-SEC awards and went on to have a long NFL career. He finished his college career with 284 tackles and nine picks.
  • Marcus Maye is super versatile and was a big part of establishing us as DBU. He and Todd Johnson would mix extremely well, as Johnson could almost be a 4th linebacker while Maye could drop back in case of a passing play.
Arguments against TebowTime
Offense:
  • TebowTime's interior offensive line would fail to repel Brad Culpepper or Trace Armstrong. While the linemen are good, they fail to come close to Culpepper's consensus All-American status or Trace Armstrong's Pro Bowl selection. These are the best DTs in Gator history going against offensive linemen who would have to be looked up by most Gator fans. Combine that with Tebow's poor throwing motion and release, and a lot of balls will be swatted down. Some strip sacks might happen, too.
  • Wes Chandler was great, but Janoris Jenkins would match up against him well. There is no big height or speed mismatch for Chandler here. Janoris is a great man corner and would limit what Chandler would do in this matchup.
  • Tyrie Cleveland's has elite speed, but unfortunately lacks in route running. He's a great burner, but between Dee Webb's speed, Marcus Maye's smart coverage, and Stoops's defensive genius, there won't be a opening downfield to exploit.
  • Nat Moore was a talented receiver in the NFL but during his time at Florida, he was a runningback. His honorable mention All-American and first team all-SEC designations, as well as his other UF accolades, were for a different position than the one he is listed at for TT. While playing for the Dolphins, his stats were inflated by playing with Bob Griese and Dan Marino.
  • Brandon James was a Devin Hester type, primarily a return specialist.
  • Tebow and Larry Smith are both great, but they will not have the time in the pocket or running lanes to have an impact. Especially for Smith, who is being asked to have the job of a modern day spread offense runningback, despite having played in the 60s for Florida. It isn't a good fit.
Defense:
  • TebowTime's great LB corps won't matter when the defensive line gets bullied by our massive offensive line. Their DTs are good but nowhere near the caliber needed to deal with Maurkice Pouncey and remnants of the Great Wall of Florida. As for Ferguson and Van Sickel, both were born before women had the right to vote. Needless to say, the game has changed a LOT since these guys played (they're massively undersized, especially Van Sickel at 5'10), and they wouldn't be able to generate any pressure on Jason Odom or Kenyatta Walker. Also, Ferguson was a better receiver for Florida than a defensive end, just saying.
  • TebowTime's secondary is built to defend the pass. They match up poorly against our offense. Vernon Hargreaves had serious problems defending the outside run, and seeing as Wilber Marshall can only be in one place, Bob Stoops would easily manipulate this to either run outside and have Emmitt Smith destroy Vernon Hargreaves, or get Hargreaves in a mismatch covering an elite receiver like Doering or a speedster like Callaway or Rainey. While TT's defense has some great players, it fails to adequately match up to our offense, and is exploitable.
  • Also, Bob Stoops is a national championship winning head coach and defensive coordinator, and has won 10 big 12 championships as head coach. Ray Graves never won his conference in 10 years of being Florida's HC.

Codebreakers VS 908 Group

2. Why We Will Win

Offensive Strategy
Urban Meyer famously ran the Spread Option Offense while at UF and won 2 National Championships in his time here. It is our belief as the Front Office that based off of Meyer’s success over his career he should have no issues beating the defense he’s been presented with.
At his disposal he has Quarterback Chris Leak, who Coach Meyer won an SEC and National Championship with in 2006. He also has what we believe to be one of the strongest offensive lines in the history of Florida Football, anchored by Trent Brown and 2 members of The Great Wall. In addition to these pieces on the line of scrimmage we have former 5 star tackle Martez Ivey who was a solid player in his UF career and Jeff Mitchellwhose resume and impact of UF’s 1996 National Championship season cannot be understated. Running behind this stellar offensive line is UF’s All Time Leading Rusher Eric Rhett. In his UF career Rhett racked up 34 touchdowns and 4,163 rushing yards, as well as 1,230 receiving yards which would make him the type of versatile and explosive back perfect for an Urban Meyer offense.
Our game plan on offense is to feed Eric Rhett early and often, and while McGrew and Alex Brown are good run defenders we think that we can run the football right at David Galloway and there would be little he could do about it. Galloway was considered to be much more of a pass rusher and is very light for a defensive linemen, weighing in at 225. We think that by spreading out “The 908 Groups” linebackers we can play the numbers game all up and down the field. Open running lanes will give Eric Rhett the opportunity to hit holes and use his break away speed to get deep into the secondary of the 908 Group and force their defensive backs to tackle him in space, which is no easy feat considering that even if they’re able to get their hands on Rhett bringing him down is no easy task..
When the defense for the 908 Group started cheat up we have full confidence that our receiving core which features Dallas Baker the Touchdown Maker, Ricky Nattiel who is one of the most heartwarming success stories in UF history and former 5 star wide receiver Trevon Grimes who is an explosive athlete with great size. Another deadly option is a swing pass out to Ciatrick “C4” Faison who can outrun anyone on the field. With Urban calling the plays we don’t see a scenario in which the opposing defense can consistently stop our offense.
Defensive Strategy
Stopping a Steve Spurrier led offense with Will Grier at the helm will be no easy accomplishment. Fortunately for us our pass defense is among the strongest you’ll see, our secondary has 36 interceptions between them. Former All American Kewaiin Ratliff’s success as a defensive back is well known to anyone who follows Florida Football. Major Wright is one of the most intimidating safeties in the history of Florida Football, Teako Brown helped UF win a Natty in 1996 with his play at Strong Safety and Purifoy earned All SEC Honors before going to the NFL.
Our linebackers are some of the most athletic you’ll find and should have no issue moving sideline to sideline to help cover the pass, as well as filling their gaps in a run defense that features Kevin Carter who was an All American defensive end and played 14 seasons in the NFL, Jon Bullard who is currently a member of the Chicago Bears (and everyone knows the strength of that team is the defensive line and linebackers) and Jabari Zuniga who is in line to be one of the next great defensive linemen to come out of UF. These linemen, as well as Aex McCallister at the Buck, will have no problem getting through their line (who only has 1 All American among them) and consistently hurrying Grier. When given time at West Virginia (and UF before being suspended for PEDS, then leaving the program) Grier was a good passer, but when hurried he was much more mistake prone and often held onto the football too long which resulted in sacks or errant passes where our defensive backs will thrive and add to their combined 36 career interceptions. We also never got to see how Grier fared against an elite college defense, as his time in the SEC was very limited before he jumped ship for the Big 12.
We feel like the 908 Group will attempt to attack us through the air early and often, as their rushing attack is nothing to write home about. And while their passing attack seems to be a legitimate threat we feel that it’s a method of offense that is unsustainable with the pass rush that Grier will be facing.
Let’s also not forget, our mascot is THE ONE, THE ONLY u/FloridaGators because we are the only team worthy of being sponsored by the team’s official reddit account. If that doesn’t say Florida Gators champion we aren’t sure what does.

2. Why We Will Win

“The Codebreakers are still doing cartwheels because they went 7-6 and won a bowl.”

Spurrier is my Head Coach!

He has so many weapons. Before you vote please consider these facts:

OFFENSE

Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green and Jack Jackson were ALL-American’s and ALL-SEC WR’s. Not just good receivers, GREATreceivers and they are all on my team under the leadership of Steven Orr Spurrier. Each one of them is a game breaker. Do you have 3 lockdown corners to stop all of these guys? No? Well it’s going to be a long game for you.
Neal Anderson at RB still holds 3rd place all time on the Florida Gator’s rushing list. Along with the 3 aforementioned WR’s spreading the field this stud RB will show you why he was a 4x pro bowler in the NFL. You can’t crowd the line and anticipate the run to stop Anderson because my receivers will kill you on the back end. Choose your death.
Flex: Kadarius Toney - Go ahead and focus all your attention on the 3 ALL-American WR’s or the 3rd leading rusher in Florida History. If you ignore Toney he will find the open field and gash you. HE will severely punish you with his electric speed. Spurrier will find many ways to get him the ball. While the top 3 WR’s are running vertical every play, Mr. Toney will peal off into open space underneath and kill any hopes you had of a nice game. Who’s going to cover him? One of the LB’s on the field built to stop the run? SMH.
The offense runs through QB Will Grier. How good is Will Grier? I’m glad you asked. His career Passing Efficiency rating of 165.2 is 9th ALL TIME in the NCAA. ALL TIME. To put that into perspective: Danny Wuerffel is 11th all time and the team we’re playing with Chris Leak at QB, he’s not bad but he isn’t that good either coming in at 186th. (you read that correctly)
Sure we all wanted Tebow or Cam or Weurffel at QB but since we didn’t have the chance, I implore you to ignore your heart and look at the stats. Grier is a top tier College QB and Spurrier as his Head Coach and the personnel around him make him a great choice to lead our team.
The OL-is also a collection of All-SEC lineman. There are no holes on this team.
Mo Collins:1st rounder of the NFL Draft. Zach Piller: First team All-SEC, 3rd round pick. Cal Dixon: 2x All-SEC Center and 2nd team All-American, and he won The Jacob’s Blocking Trophy. Phil Tratwein: 2x All-SEC. Dan Fike: 2nd team All-SEC and played in the NFL for 10 seasons.

DEFENSE

A very well rounded unit with Super Stars at all 3 levels.
Defense Front 7: (SEE BELOW) I hope you’re sitting down
All-Time FLORIDA GATOR Career SACK records
1. Alex Brown: 33 sacks 2. Alonzo Johnson: 27 sacks 3. Huey Richardson: 26.5 sacks 4. Clifford Chalrton: 25 sacks 5. David Galloway: 21 sacks
We own the top 4 career sack leaders in Florida Gator History! OUR FRONT 7 has 5 guys on the top 7 list!!! Does anyone else even have 2 of the top 10? Where is Wilber Marshall? Oh 5th.. He’s great but apparently I have 4 who were better sackers.. It’s also not all about sacks either. These guys are tremendous athletes who are also making tackles for losses. They are playmakers all over the field. Huey Richardson at BUCK: is a 6’5 238lbFirst Round draft pick.. WHAT?!
What about the secondary? They can’t be as good as the front 7, can they?

YES THEY CAN homie!

Name the consensus top CB to come through DBU: Joe Haden. Yup, he’s ours. Joe Haden is the premier lock down corner. Ryan Smith is the other corner and he was brought over from Utah and all he did was lead the nation in INT’s his only year with the mighty Gators. In fact, Ryan Smith’s 8 picks for a single season are 2nd all time and he’s my legit #2 corner.

Safety’s

Are you ready for this?
Who is the ONLY Defensive Back in FLORIDA GATOR History to win the JIM THORPE AWARD, recognizing the best defensive back in college football?
LAWRENCE “MOTHERFUCKING” WRIGHT. Out of all the DB’s that have come out of DBU only one has won this award and he anchors our last line of defense. With his devastating skills he is both safety, linebacker and KILLING MACHINE!
Tony Lilly will be manning the other safety position. First team All-SEC and Second Team All American who was a 3rd round draft pick in the NFL.
About our matchup:
Our opponent has Chris Leak at QB throwing to Dallas Baker, Ricky Nattiel and Trevon Grimes. Listen, I’m 100% Gator but these guys are just average. Ricky is good but I do have Joe Haden to shut that down. Grimes and Baker? Well, they aren’t all time greats we can all agree on that.
What about Errict Rhett? I’m glad you asked.. Well the Codebreakers made a fatal flaw designing their offense. Rhett is great… No doubt but WHO IS GOING TO BLOCK FOR HIM? Where is the Fullback? Where is the Blocking TE? Oh he doesn’t have those!!! He has 3 WR’s and a second RB. So, I bring Lawrence Wright into the box and we outnumber his blockers easily. Leak isn’t running and if Leak passes, he better hurry up, we’ve already discussed my prolific SACK EXCHANGE. But does it even matter if none of his WR’s are open?? He had the chance to choose some of the best players in history and Dallas Baker and Trevon Grimes are his 2 WR’s? um… ok..

IN CONCLUSION

This game is a complete mismatch and it does NOT favor Codebreakers at all. My offense led by Spurrier has all the weapons to dominate and the Defense is just as prolific. Stats and scheme back this up. Urban Meyer is a great coach but remember when he just had Leak and no Tebow? That team went to the Gator Bowl to play Iowa. Bet with your head and vote for the better team to win!

Welcome to /r/CFB! Here is your 2018 Rules Refresher and Our Pre-Season Schedule

Kliff Kingsbury Dudes and dudettes, welcome back to college football!
We are now less than two weeks away from the first FBS games of the 2018-2019 college football season. LET'S DO THIS!

Tigger Are you new here?

We would like to welcome you to the greatest place on the internet, /CFB! We are a community of over 450,000 college football fanatics from all over the globe who live and breathe college football and are some of the most passionate fans you’ll ever find. We love arguing about BBQ, beer, and fall weddings #stopfallweddings.
There is just something about college football that grabs you and makes you want to scream at a TV for 12 straight hours on Saturdays. We should warn you, however, that college football is not for the faint of heart. There will be rage, laughter, sorrow, celebration, and shock.
There are countless CFB teams for you to root for - wherever you are in the USA (or even some parts of the world), you've got a college football team nearby. We do our best to cover them all.
Once you have found a team to support you should consider picking up a flair to show your fandom and pride. /CFB has over 2,300 unique flairs to choose from. /CFB currently has the ability for dual flairs. This allows you to show your fandom for two teams or your team and its conference, or even show your support for BelkBowl and wear a flair for your favorite bowl game!
Each Saturday there will be a number of Game Threads where discussion for each game goes on. For the Featured Games on the sidebar, CFB_Referee will post a Featured Game Thread an hour before kickoff. If you don't see a thread for the game you are watching, feel free to make one with our Game Thread Creator!

Touchdown Rule Refresher

Here at /CFB we have some pretty simple rules but here are some of the important ones to keep in mind.
No flair based downvoting
While there is no way for us to check this, we would still like to bring it to attention. The downvote button does not exist to put down teams you don't like, people you don't like, or opinions you don't like. Instead, use it to get rid of trolls or bad content. Downvoting just because of flair makes Coach Snyder sad. Don't make Coach Snyder sad.
No flamebait, personal attacks or harassment
Does this really need to be explained? Don't be a troll. Have a good time on /CFB and be nice. No argument is worth getting into on the internet. We encourage strong debates and good discussion but if it ultimately comes down to "You are wrong, I am right" and name calling you will be banned.
No racism, homophobia, sexism, or other bigotry
Seriously. Discussing college football should never lead to this. Remember, this is a place to talk about football, that's it. One of the great things about /CFB is that it isn't the ESPN or AL.com comment sections - it's a welcoming place for fans of all teams, regardless of who you are.
Tweets must be made as self-posts
To cut down on Tweet-spam, all direct Twitter links will be removed.
Use the weekly threads
Like last season we have a weekly thread on every day of the week. These threads cover everything from predictions to highlights. If you post a link that belongs in one of these threads it will be removed without warning.
Word-for-word pasting of paywall content
We can't allow users to repost content from paid sites. There is a reason the paywall exists and writers deserve the money. Feel free to quickly summarize an article, though.
Which team/fanbase is X threads
Threads designed to put down other teams or fanbases will be removed. We want posts that encourage positive discussion and debate, not collective hate. We have had plenty of these threads in the past and there is no reason to have anymore. Example thread titles include "Which fanbase is most delusional?" and "Which team do you irrationally hate?"
Reporting
While this isn't a rule, it does help us make sure the rules get applied consistently. We can't be everywhere, so that means we need you to help out by reporting posts that break the rules. You may have noticed the new options for reporting comments and submissions - hopefully this will make things easier!
NEW
We now have a separate site with our full list of rules and guidelines! PLEASE READ THE FULL LIST OF RULES HERE! This includes information about our ban policy, our post rules, and our rules for posting about recruits and transfers.

Lee Corso Final Thoughts

This season will be the biggest and busiest season in /CFB's history. We've nearly doubled in size since our welcome post last year. Seriously - we had just passed 250,000 subscribers this time last year and now we're staring down half a million. We continue to grow and push our outreach even farther, adding more CFB media coverage and outreach, new AMAs, and new options for our users. But remember, /CFB is built by you, the user. Without the daily content submitted or the thousands of comments, /CFB would be a barren place. We hail ourselves as being the best subreddit on reddit and we are doing our best to keep it that way. With so many users, there are bound to be a few bad apples. Don't let them steer you away. Let's do our best to welcome new users and educate them on the sport we all know and love. Here is to more touchdowns, more fans, and another amazing season on /CFB.

Bombs Away! A surprising but better 2019 Draft Outcome for the New York Giants - Football Philosophy

https://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/draft.php?d=vlrche

This is all predicated on no trades and nothing changing but the philosophy and overall strategy can be analyzed and debated based on the outcome. I will do my best to explain these hypothetical decisions. You have the information to critique them based on the given link above. You can see where everybody went and where. Its fun and I recommend it. It helps you get familiar with the players as well. Nobody will have the same grades or opinions on every player but it is a very useful tool. For sake of argument I "overdrafted" some players based on the rankings and taking certain guys at more believable slots. I didn't want to cheat the draft. This is one draft I did tonight while watching the Sugar Bowl. I didn't do multiple drafts and select the one I did the best in. I don't know 500 college football players intimately and this is mostly guesstimates on how good each of them are. I will provide the limited knowledge I have of them as we go through the picks. Lets get to it!

First round
Devin White ILB - LSU (Consensus best middle linebacker in the entire draft. Expected to go no later than the middle of the first round. What seperates White from Mack from Alabama is Mack is a OLB in a 4-3 or ILB in a 4-3. Not like White who is a big fast dude comfortable in a 3-4 constantly blitzing. White is the perfect leader of a 3-4 Defense. He is the fastest MLB in the draft and if you go and look at his tape he routinely rushes the QB on delayed blitzes and is a true sideline to sideline defender. He harrasses QBs. He is not an "awe shucks" kind of guy. I heard him by chance on the radio after the Fiesta Bowl and he proclaimed his desire to not just be good but to be the best middle linebacker in the NFL/College Football. Sounds good to me. I make him our top pick and the new QB of our Defense. I make a change in the organizational philosophy back to the '80s and '90s where we are now a Defensive team again. I like this idea because we have Saquon and Odell already. Who leads that voyage will be answered in the next pick.

Second round
Will Grier QB - WVU
(You already heard me bitch and moan about Grier. So I will keep this short. Clutch player. With our first pick I already explained what the new philosophy of the team will be. Devin White is the new leader of 50% of the New York Giants. He will take care of that side of the ball. Will Grier's job is to get the ball into the hands of Saquon, Engram, Shepherd and Odell. While Grier learns, the RPO game is opened up and quick throws out to the flats to Odell and Shepherd are opened up. He is quick and athletic, has scrambling ability as well and can execute designed run plays. Added into it he throws a great deep ball. 70% accuracy on +30 balls just like Tua and Haskins. Grier is my Trubisky but better and I am getting him later. I like him. He likes me. He wants to be the QB of the Giants. All he needed was someone that believed in him. I give him that belief and he is going to give me everything he has. He told me. I looked in his eye and I believe him. I also told him if he doesn't produce after the risk I am taking on him? He will be discarded faster than he can count to ten.)

Third round
Sam Beal CB - Western Michigan (Giants cornerback already taken in the supplemental draft)

Fourth round - Our (3) Fourth Round Picks. One Early. Two late. (Eli Apple trade)
David Edwards OT - Wisconsin (Passed on higher rated guys and took the guy I want. Have you seen the Wisconsin Offensive Line play? I have and their "Not Saquon" Running Back amassed 2,000 yards this year. Good back. But not Saquon. Not even close. The Wisconsin OL is so good that Edwards didn't even play in the Pinstripe Bowl and the running back still got 200 yards and some touchdowns in the game in a blowout. Our new RT is grabbed at the top of the fourth and Wheeler heads to the backup role and bunch formation duty)
Pass Rushers.
Sutton Smith OLB - Northern Illinois
Jaylon Ferguson OLB - Louisiana Tech
Bottom line these guys are raw and hungry and have gotten sacks at the NCAA level. Getting sacks at the NCAA level is hard. Even though the NFL is a pass heavy league the NCAA is even more of a quick pass and grab and throw environment than the NFL. Opportunities for sacks are hard to come by. These guys sack the QB. So after our pick of Devin White at pick 6 we give him two roomates that he brainwashes into becoming convinced they are better than Von Miller and Clay Matthews. These picks are presupposed that we jettison/trade Vernon and ultimately have an OLB group of Lorenzo Carter, Smith, Ferguson and Martin. We are betting on upside because our top 6 pick is bringing the heat up the middle behind BJ Hill and Tomlinson.)

Fifth round - Our (3) Fifth Round Picks. Two Early. (Damon Harrison trade) One late.
JR Reed FS - Georgia
(Gibril Wilson version Two. We have too many needs to spend a high pick in the second round on a Deonte Thompson from Alabama. We do the smart thing here and take one of Thompson's contemporaries. A guy with something to prove who feels disrespected for falling into the Fifth round. A guy that was just playing in the Sugar Bowl and SEC championship game and is no stranger to big games.)
Tyler Biadiasz C - Wisconsin
(Pulley is ahead of Halapio on my depth chart. No expectations for players that got season ending injuries before they ever earned the job. Come in and compete? Sure. But Pulley was available, is young, actually played in the games, and has upside. Extra points for being with this group and developing chemistry. I hope Pulley can start but I just sent a message to him that nothing is going to be guaranteed. He is going to have to earn it. Tyler is a Wisconsin OL. 'Nuff said.)
Kaden Smith TE - Stanford
(Ellison is my permanent TE lined up on the line competing with this guy. Evan Engram (If I don't trade him at his upside) is now a WR that lines up outside or bare minimum five yards off the line against a LB. No more hand in the dirt. If I keep him I am actually telling him he needs to lose 20 pounds and embrace his new role as a WR for the next three years. I hand him a bunch of videos of Plaxico and Hakeem Nicks and make sure he watches the videos and learns its actually awesome to be a big WR that abuses small cornerbacks...
Anyway back to Smith...
Watch his tape. He makes contested catches where defenders are all over him. He wears #82 probably because Jason Witten is his idol. True two way TE that can catch those necessary short five yard throws over the middle to sustain drives without getting knocked unconscious like a 240 pound WR. We get a Jason Witten clone in round five where Parcells drafted Witten in round three where we drafted Shockey in round one. We are killing this draft. Already got our TE after we cut Ellison in 2020.)
Sixth round - Elijah Holyfield RB - Georgia
(Speedy half back to spell Saquon. Gallman is a tough gritty guy that gets those extra yardage. Holyfield is my insurance if anything happens to Barkley. I like the idea of having him go in the game and lining up Saquon at the WR slot as well. The Giants did not have Saquon lined up outside enough for my liking. Get him out there!)

Seventh round - Two picks late (Can't remember those trades)
Bobby Evans OT - Oklahoma
(I grab an OT that can learn OG and be the backup to Brown and Hernandez. Hopefully he can be a backup at OT as well. Not drafting someone from Cal Tech A & M here. Oklahoma. Play like you played there.)
Denzel Mims WR - Baylor
(Keep seeing this guy lasting this long. 6'3 and 210lbs. Fifty catches and Eight touchdowns in back to back seasons. Top of the value board and we need a big WR to keep defenses honest on go routes so Odell, Shepherd and Saquon can run routes underneath. Not drafting someone we need to be a 1 or anything like that. Drafting a fourth receiver that is part of the game plan in sub packages.)

So there you have it. That is how I get the Giants back on the right track. I hope this provides some ideas on how to navigate Free Agency and the Draft. Where and who we might have to trade or whatever. There is a good chance that many of these players go higher and many of them go lower than where they were picked here. I'm using someone elses rankings based on what was released today on new years. Enjoy nonetheless. I had fun doing it, hope you like reading it.

Teams Trying To Make Their First Ever NCAA Tournament (Week 1)

The Atlantic Sun Tournament kicks off tonight, officially starting March Madness. There are 43 teams that have never made The NCAA Tournament, and my favorite thing to do in these smaller tournaments is to cheer them on.
Since numerous leagues still have regular season games this week, and therefore their brackets aren't set I will only be listing teams starting their conference tournaments this week. I will do a second list next week.
We can already start by eliminating 3 teams. In the NEC only the top 8 teams qualify for the tourney and Sacred Hart as well as Bryant failed to do so (finishing 9th and 10th respectively). In The Ohio Valley, The Skyhawks of Tennessee - Martin who lost in the championship game last year, missed out on their tournament on a tie breaker against fellow never dancer SIU-Edwardsville. Better luck next year to those 3.
Atlantic Sun (February 26th - March 4th on ESPN3 and ESPN)
#2 Lipscomb - Perhaps one of the best bets this year for a new tourney team, the Bison had a solid year going 10-4 in Asun Play and earning the second seed. They'll open up with fellow never dancer Stetson tonight. A win would pit them against the winner of Jacksonville/Kennesaw State on Thursday. They will get to play the first two games of the tourney on home court.
#4 New Jersey Institute of Technology - The Highlanders were for awhile college basketballs final independent, but they've finally found a home in the ASUN and have held up okay there. They went .500 in league play and will face North Florida at home tonight. If they hold serve, regular season champs Florida Gulf Coast are likely waiting for them in the semis.
#6 Kennesaw State - The Owls did actually win The Division 2 national championship in 2004, but it's been a rough transition to D1 since. They will face the 3 seed Jacksonville tonight.
#7 Stetson - The Hatters deserve a tourney spot for their name alone, but this probably isn't the year for them. They'll play Lipscomb on the road tonight (where they did only lose by 3 in the regular season).
#8 USC Upstate - Rough year for The Spartans, who fun fact, have the smallest arena in D1 (only seating 878 fans). They went 2-12, finishing last in ASun play. They will need to stun regular season champs Florida Gulf Coast on the road tonight if they want to move on.
Big South (February 27th - March 4th on BSN, ESPN3 and ESPN)
#6 Gardner-Webb - Not a great year for Big South Never Dancers as the 6 seed Bulldogs (who beat Kentucky awhile back) look like the best hope. They'll open the tournament with defending champs Winthrop at a neutral site on Thursday.
#7 High Point - The Panthers have traditionally been a bit of chokers in this tournament. They've won at least a share of the regular season championship 4 of the last 6 years, yet have never manged to get it done in the tourney. Maybe being a shitty seed is the key. They'll have to win a play in game at home against cellar dwellers Longwood tomorrow night.
#9 Presbyterian - The Blue Hose have an interesting name. They'll be on the road in a play in game against Charleston Southern tomorrow night.
#10 Longwood - The Lancers have had a rough go since joining D1 in 2005, only posting one winning season. This probably isn't the year for the team that finished last in the league. They'll play on the road at High Point tomorrow night.
Patriot League (February 27th - March 7th on PLN and CBSSN)
#9 Army - Not only have The Black Knights never made the tourney, they're also one of only 4 of the founding members to never make it. They'll play on the road at Loyola tomorrow night and if they win league champs Bucknell (who went 16-2) are awaiting them at home
Northeast Conference (February 28th - March 6th on NEC, ESPN3 and ESPN2)
#5 St. Francis Brooklyn - Like Army, The Terriers are also one of the 4 founding members to never dance, and with Bryant and Sacred Heart failing qualify, they're the only hope for a never dancer out of the NEC. They'll play LIU Brooklyn on the road tomorrow night
Ohio Valley (February 28th - March 3rd on OVCDN, ESPNU, and ESPN2)
#8 SIU Edwardsville - The Cougars are the 8th and worst seed in the OVC Tourney and only qualified on a tie breaker. You might look and that and say "there's no way an 8 seed wins the OVC Tournament", well you'd be wrong, because Austin Peay did that 2 years ago. They'll play Tennessee Tech Wednesday night.
MAAC (March 1st - March 5th on ESPN3 and ESPN)
#7 Qunnipiac - They don't just conduct polls over there, they also have a basketball team called The Bobcats. They'll open the tourney with Siena on Thursday and then they have league co champs Canisius waiting if they win.
Southern Conference (March 2nd - March 5th on ESPN3 and ESPN2)
#8 The Citadel - The Bulldogs are the 3rd of the 4 original members to never dance on this list. The Bulldogs will likely keep waiting though. They'll open with The Keydets of VMI on Friday and surviving that means a date with regular season champs Greensboro on Saturday
Horizon League (March 2nd - March 6th on ESPN3, ESPNU, and ESPN)
#9 Youngstown State - The Penguins (who's school president is former OSU Football Coach Jim Tressel) open up with Cleveland State on Friday and then have regular season champs Nothern Kentucky waiting for them Saturday. Now a 9 seed beating a 1 sounds like a longshot, but YSU did just that last year against Oakland.
America East (March 3rd - March 10th on ESPN3 and ESPN2)
Now the AEC still has a regular season game left, but since it's starts this Saturday I'll include it on the list. All the seeds are set except for the 2 and the 3 seeds between Hartford and UMBC
#2 or #3 Hartford - Hartford is tied with UMBC entering the final game and will be the 2 or 3 seed depending how that goes. They'll be at home for the quarterfinal and potentially for the semis as well.
#6 New Hampshire - The Wildcats, who have a solid FCS Football Program will be the 6 seed in this tournament and will be on the road on Saturday for a quarterfinal game against either Hartford or UMBC.
#7 UMass-Lowell - The Riverhawks are in the first year of eligibility after moving up from D2 in 2013. They will be on the road Saturday against either UMBC or Hartford
#8 Maine - Fun Fact, outside of Alaska which doesn't have a D1 team, Maine is the only state to never produce a tourney school. The 3-12 Black Bears probably won't end that streak this year as they have 14-1 Vermont waiting for them Saturday.
Colonial (March 3rd - March 6th on CAA TV and CBSSN)
#4 William & Mary - The Tribe are the 4th and final founding member on this list to never dance, and they're probably the only ones with a semi decent chance. They'll open with Towson on Saturday. They'll likely have Regular Season Champs and tournament hosts Charleston awaiting them in the semis though.
#7-10 Elon - The Phoenix do have one game left tonight and will be in the 7 to 10 range of seeding. Either way that means a play in game Saturday.
The Summit League (March 3rd - March 6th on ESPN3 and ESPN)
#2 South Dakota - 5 of the 8 teams in this tournament have never danced and the most likely to breakthough appears to be The Coyotes who went 11-3 in league play. The Yotes were the one seed last year but were upset by their instate rivals in the semis. SDSU is the one seed this year so it would be a good chance for revenge. They open with Omaha Saturday
#3 Denver - It was a decent year for the hockey powerhouse, who went 8-6 in league play earning a 3 seed. They'll open with Oral Roberts Sunday night
#4 Fort Wayne - The Mastodons did blow out Indiana in Bloomington earlier this year. Sadly though once you get to Summit League Play you stop playing cupcakes and they only put up a .500 record. They'll open with normally good, but down North Dakota State on Sunday.
#7 Omaha - The Mavericks have actually been okay since moving up to D1 in 2011, they've made the CBI twice. They took a bit of a step back this year though, only going 4-10 in league play. They play South Dakota Saturday night.
#8 Western Illinois - Last and potentially least on this list is The Leathernecks, who did manage to give Butler a scare this year only losing by 61. They'll open and likely close with 13-1 league champs South Dakota State Saturday night.

NBA (703) CHICAGO BULLS VS (704) ORLANDO MAGIC
Take: UNDER
Reason: Your free play for Friday, November 3 is in the NBA contest between the Chicago Bulls and the Orlando Magic. Chicago looks for its first win on the road this season against three losses. The Bulls are 1-5 overall and 0-3 away, but have covered four of six games. The Magic are 6-2 S/U and a perfect 3-0 S/U at home. Fourth pick Aaron Gordon is playing great, shooting 60.9% from the field over the last five games. The struggling Bulls bright spot is Rookie 7-foot-0 forward Lauri Markkanen, who had a season best 25 points last time and is averaging 17.2 ppg. The Magic have gone UNDER in 14 of their last 20 against the NBA Central. The Bulls are 1-4 O/U their last five overall. In addition, the last four meetings between these teams in Orlando have gone UNDER and the last seven in the series have gone UNDER. Play the UNDER here on Friday.

MIKE LUNDIN NBA | Nov 03, 2017 Raptors vs. Jazz Raptors+1½
The Toronto Raptors took a 129-111 beating at Denver on Wednesday, and that can't sit right with this talented Raptors side. "That was an embarrassing performance by all of us, from coaches to players," coach Dwane Casey told reporters in Denver. "One thing we said: You've got to come in here and compete and play hard, play a physical game, and we didn't do either one on either end of the floor." I think the Jazz will pay the price as Toronto looks to bounce when it closes out a six-game road trip at Salt Lake City Friday night. Utah could be due for a clunker after reeling off three straight wins, including a dramatic come-from-behind 112-103 OT win against Portland its last time out. Raptors are 8-0 ATS in the last eight meetings including 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Utah.
BEN BURNS NBA | Nov 03, 2017 Celtics vs. Thunder Thunder-5½ -115
When the new Big 3 was assembled in Oklahoma City, it figured that Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony would grind teams into the hardwood with relentless offense. But OKC has made its mark with defense, and the Thunder will battle another early-season defensive titan tonight when they take on the Celtics. In fact, Boston and OKC are 1-2 in the league in defense so far this season. The Thunder will be a major test for Boston, whose wins have come against teams with only one major scoring threat (Embiid, Andrich, Antetokounmpo, Porzingis). Look for OKC's three-pronged attack to bring Boston down a notch as the Celtics play the first of a three-games-in-four-days stretch.

Philly hosts indiana and both teams are hot coming into this matchup with three straight wins vs quality opponents. The Pacers beat the Spurs at home and the Cavaliers on the road, while Philadelphia knocked off the Rockets on the road. Those are all extremely impressive wins.
The bottom line in this game is while mostly the talent is evenly matched, Embiid is the premier big man in this game. Besides, the fact that Turner is still up in the air about returning from his concussion, you have to give a big advantage the 76ers here at home.
A look inside the number shows more evidence to this. Philadelphia is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game. 76ers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win. 76ers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 1 day of rest.
Bet the Sixers.

7-Unit Play. Take #653 Winnipeg (+10) over Calgary (9:30 p.m., Friday, November 3) 5-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 52.5 Winnipeg at Calgary (9:30 p.m., Friday, November 3)
The Bombers need this win to get the two seed in the playoffs and get a home game. They will have to figure out their problems on both sides of the ball if they wan that to happen. Winnipeg has dropped two in a row to create this must win game and have done so with little hope for this week being better. They could be without two of their top playmakers in quarterback Matt Nichols and running back Andrew Harris but have a chance to at least cover and maybe even win with the way the Stamps have been playing. Calgary was head and shoulders above all challengers three weeks ago but had since come back down to the pack with two straight losses. It could just be general malaise but may be more than that. This game will show if the Stamps have a chance to claim the cup or if they are ready to go home early come Grey Cup time. Take the points and the over as there should be some pride for both teams to show better than they have lately.
Best of luck - Strike Point Sports

3 Unit Play. Take #322 Utah -6.5 over UCLA (9:30p.m., Friday November 3 FS-1) Both PAC-12 teams come into this game with 4-4 records but since the Utah Utes get this game in their backyard and the UCLA Bruins struggling on offense I see the Utes grabbing a much-needed home conference victory. Utah has dropped 4-straight since beating Arizona on the road and usually the Utes play great defense but lately we haven't seen it but Friday night we will see the Utes 'D' making some big stops against UCLA. UCLA QB Josh Rosen is still questionable because of a hand injury and I believe he plays but no matter if he is in or not the Utes will win this home game. Also, lets throw in the Bruins are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games and a horrendous 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games.
