my poker journey

My first real taste of poker came in grade 10. I was maybe fifteen, sixteen at the time, and we organized a five card draw game during second period spare. Eventually we got busted by the teachers. I was eighteen when the poker boom hit. My friends and I played $5 SNGs and WPT Tournaments were a big deal on TV. Then a .10/.25 NLHE home game (some nights .25/.50). This game was classic. Actually I played a rather effective loose aggro style at the time. Well I would switch gears, a bit looser early on, some bluffs, and then straight value towards the end of the night. Really we didn't know anything, but we the great thing about poker is you only have to be slightly better than your opponents.
There was a raked 1/2 game in my town, the Rounders Club or something they called themselves, that I cut my eyeteeth on. Then casino trips. I remember sitting down at a 5/10 limit hold'em game. This was so long ago people actually played limit hold'em.
One day there was a tournament in town, someone had rented a warehouse and set up a tournament. I busted in the tournament with an underpair to the top pair, but with the $200 I had left in my pockets I cleaned up on the cash game, playing 1/2 with a bunch of degenerate cabbies. I'd swing crazy amounts online. I was still in high school the first time I ran up a tiny amount of money to three grand on pokerstars, before losing it all quickly. I was fairly degenerate at that age, but we were young and invincible. I went broke a bunch of times, and then scraped together a bankroll and grinded online.
At one point I moved to Niagara Falls to try my hand at live poker. It went pretty decently for a couple of months. It was full ring NLHE, and the games were very soft, filled with rich tourists. I was living in a nearby hotel and grinding the casino all day. One day I tried my hand at blackjack and lost almost ten grand. I had a ton of cash on me, from all my poker winnings, and I started degening on blackjack for a while. I ran pretty good and had a stash of 5k chips. Then I started losing a bunch of my profits back. That is when I learned about card counting online. With my history at the casino as a whale, I was able to count full time in the high limit room for about ten days straight. And any time the count started to drop I would just hop to another table. There was always a new deck, ready to go. So I played A TON of rounds. And my poker career had steeled me not to hit and run. And I play very fast. The result was a huge winning streak. I was using a fairly aggressive spread, 1 to 16 on black. By the time they banned me I had around $200,000. Paranoid, I spent that night in a hotel.
From that point I was backed off, so I travelled Canada playing blackjacked, getting backed off and banned with my high stakes action.

Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace

WSOP Chris Moneymaker

World Series of Poker (WSOP)

200k in the hole. Started on a camping trip

A few people asked for my story so I figured I'd share. Writing it out has been good therapy I think.
I first played poker on a camping trip with some friends some 10 years ago when I was 16. We didn't play for money and we used one of those cheapo wallmart sets of chips. None of us had any idea what we were doing. Pretty much every hand was limped family pots and checking down to the river.
A year later my dad's boss invited me to a homegame with his staff. This was the first time I played with someone who knew how to play. It was $10 to play, and my dad's boss won all 3 tournaments he ran that night. For me it was pretty embarassing, folding straights face up because I thought I had a high card. Thinking a straight beats a flush. That kind of thing.
That night I learned that poker was more than just luck, and that good players could make money. So I became determined to learn how to play and how to win.
I started hosting games at my school. I brought my wallmart chip set to school and classmates would play with me on my free periods and during recess. Never for money though.
During this time I started reading some articles about poker strategy online. Or at least that was my intention. After reading some articles about bankroll management and leveling I read an article on continuation betting.
I didn't need to read any more articles because it only took the cbet to make me a BEAST at the school games. Pratically every player in this game was weak-tight and would limp preflop and check/fold any board that they missed. I started to win most sessions just by cbetting 100% of boards.
A couple wins under my belt, combined with my secret weapon (the cbet!), and I knew that I was destined to be a professional.
I started to host real home-games for money (none of us were old enough to play at the casino). Every second Friday we'd play a game with a $5-$10 buy-in (None of us had jobs). It took a few weeks to realise we had to increase the blinds to force the game to end at a reasonable hour, and a few more weeks to figure out a structure that actually made sense.
I tracked all the results of these tournaments over the year, and by the end it was clear that I was the best. I had the largest ROI, the most first places, the most cashes, the most final tables. Every metric that mattered. And it was all thanks to my trusty cbet.
I wanted to go pro. I had no other career aspirations so I stopped paying attention in school and would just day dream about poker. I wanted to play all the time so I signed up to pokerstars under my mum's name because I was still only 17.
Because I had no bankroll on stars I played in the freeroll tournaments every day. The field was usually 9,000 players large, and I played in the 6pm game after school ended but before I went to bed. First place payed $6, so I knew I only needed to win 1 to launch my online poker career.
I quickly learned that 100% cbet was actually not so good against the stations and maniacs that play in freerolls. I had to change the way I played if I wanted to make it to the money.
Eventually, after a few weeks of busting before the first break, I made it to the money and I cashed in at 200th place for 50 cents - which just so happened to be the minimum buy-in for the 1c/2c cash game on stars.
I FINALLY HAD AN ONLINE BANKROLL!
I immediately sat down at a 9-ring cash game and bought in with my prize winnings. It took less than 5 minutes to completely decimate my bankroll. Much to my dismay, the players sitting at the lowest stakes cash game available in the entire country played like poker GODS! What the hell? Every one of my bluffs was called down. Every time I called down a bluff they had it. It was mental, these players were so good. Unlike anyone I had ever played against before.
At this point I knew I'd have to return to my poker studies if I wanted to have any chance at all. So I picked up my very first poker book, "Crushing the Micros", because I was gonna be playing micro stakes of course. One of the early chapters talked about the concept of set-mining and this BLEW. MY. MIND. Needless to say, I didn't feel it was necessary to read the rest of the book.
So, a few weeks later when I cashed my next freeroll tournament and returned to the 1c/2c cash game I completely changed my game. I used a new strategy where I only played pocket pairs preflop against opponents with full stacks. If I missed the flop i'd check/fold, but if I hit my set i'd check raise all in if OOP, otherwise i'd triple barrel pot bet every street if I was IP. It only took a few minutes to win my first stack with a flopped set. So I cashed out of the table and bought in to two tables.
If you've never multi-tabled before, let me tell you, it's the real deal. Twice the hands means twice the speed and that means twice the winnings. It made sense to me that I could scale this as big as possible. Back then, Pokerstars would let you play 24 tables at once - So as soon as my bankroll allowed it I started playing 24 tables at once using my se-mining strategy. The beautiful thing is, it worked!
So, playing 24 tables, only set-mining, I grew my stars bankroll to $1,000. I WAS A POKER GOD and I knew it. I crushed the school games, i crushed the home-game tournaments, and now i was crushing micro-stakes online too.
The day I turned 18 I knew it was time to crush all those fish at the casino. So for my 18th birthday I got my school poker friends (the ones who were 18 anyway) to take a trip to the casino with me.
We each brought $100 with us. 1/2 was too intimidating so the floor offered to open a 1/1 table just for us. Because it was a new table and 1/1 rarely got up, it was just us at the table for most of the night. Luckily for me though, I knew I could crush these guys with my 100% cbet strategy, and throw in a bit of set-mining and my friends stood no chance. I ended up busting every last one of my friends that night yet I only finished $300 up, which didn't make much sense. If I busted them all then shouldn't I be $800 up?
In any case, it didn't matter. I'd just proven to myself I could win at the high stakes casino games. Now I knew beyond a doubt that I could beat any game I played in. Soon I would go pro.
The next year I started uni but because I had no career aspirations besides poker, I'd just stay home and play poker online each day. Sometimes i'd go to class but I'd just play poker on my laptop in class
At some point I picked up holdem manager and imported my hand histories. Over 1 million hands I had a win-rate of 0.5 bb/100 - Yeha I know, I played a shit-load of poker.
It was eye-opening though. I'd played one million hands for pennies, with a win-rate that was hardly even positive. Just imagine if I'd been crushing that whole time instead. If my win rate was 10 bb/100 i'd be up thousands.
So once again, I was determined to get better. I bought books. Lots of books. Like, enough to fill an entire shelf of my bookshelf. And I started reading.
The theory of poker was first. Every time your opponent makes a mistake, you win. Every time you make a mistake, your opponent wins. Yes, got it, basic stuff. What's next?
Professional no limit holdem volume 1. Pot odds, implied odds, stack to pot ratio. This was life-changing stuff. Simple mathemetical concepts I'd never considered before that made so much sense in hindsight. This was it, I didn't need to read any more. Like the cbet and then the set-mine, these concepts were the missing piece I needed to take my game to the next level.
Now I know you're thinking: "Yeah ok, this is great and all but can you get to the part where you lose 200k?". And yes. Yes I can.
So I started skipping uni completely to go to the casino every day. Obviosuly I realised that the rake on 1/1 and 1/2 was fucked, so I started playing 1/3. Even though I was over 1k up online, the buyins for this stake were still HUGE to me and I played pretty scared money. And honestly, I never ended up beating 1/3. I was break-even AT BEST. (I rationalised my results by blaming the high rake. It was unbeatable, you see)
But, I made some friends playing 1/3 at the casino. One guy, Billy, started to invite me to his home game. I LOVED Billy's home game because the rake was lower than the casino's and the buy-in was only $100, which was much more reasonable.
Billy had this rule, where you could buy-in for the max stack on the table. This worked well with my set-mining check-raise all-in strategy so of course I would always buy-in for the max.
One night i'm playing in this game that's been going for 2 days straight and one palyer's got a 2k stack on the table. He's one of the fishier players so I think to myself, why not? And I buy in for my entire roll. 2k.
First hand i get JJ. Flop comes AJ7r. I check, fish bets pot. "Got ya" I think to myself, and I raise all-in.
Snap call. Oh shit. He flips over AA.
I just lost my entire roll that i'd spent the past year grinding for over 1 million+ hands. I'm tilted. Billy asks me if i'm rebuying. That was my entire roll I say.
And then Billy utters the words that you've all been waiting for. "Credit?"
And yeah, basically that's it. I've played in Billy's game ever since. And funnily enough, it turns out I'm not some poker god, i'm just a grade-a egomaniac poker fish. Billy has me for 100k on his books and i've tracked another 100k in losses i've been able to repay. So i'm down 200k over my poker lifetime.
Also, I flunked out of uni. Got married and subsequently divorced due to financial arguments. If you want to know where the money's come from I can assure you it's not my parents or a trust fund or anything like that.
I sell drugs to poker players at Billy's game.

Been playing live poker at the casino for a year, won some money, am I doing things right or just getting lucky?

I am an electrical engineer who likes math/statistics and has gotten attracted to the game of poker because I have stumbled on an MIT course about poker accidentally. Ever since I have played with my friends and tourneys. For about a year now, I have played at the local casinos for about a year now playing mostly $1/$3 with a $300 buy in and usually topping off when I am 200ish or less to 100bb, 2 buy ins stop loss (or 1 buy in after a bad beat or even earlier if players are just better than me). I have won about $7000 so far with about 200ish hours of play, however, I realize that this is pretty statistically insignificant so I want to do a sanity check if I am doing things right and I should continue. All feedback is welcome.
I study poker for about 10-20 hours per week for the last 3-4 months (where most of my winnings started coming from). I studied from the MIT poker course, splitsuits videos on youtube and Crush Live poker mainly now (I sometimes double check my hands by using flopzilla or couple of my friends that also play at the same stake, I have none that I know that plays larger).
So here is my play style, I am what you would call a nit I guess ( I am still not sure why this is bad since it seems to be printing me money at these low stakes). I am not just waiting for pocket aces/kings ace king but pretty snug, on the button, I would have my widest range at it would usually not be above 15%. (my loosest range is something like this: 22+, AKo, AQo, AJo, ATo, A2s-A5s, KQo, KJo, QJs, JTs (only when deep and in position, sometimes QJo and JTo).
EP I open premiums and 99 (99-AA) for 5-6X ($15-$20) as well as AKo, AQo, AJs (AJo and ATo I fold). I open limp 77, 88. For low pocket pairs like 66 and lower and everything else, I fold. With premiums QQs+ I will 4 bet if 3 bet (queens I will fold to a 3bet shove or if an opponent is super tight). I prefer not to play jacks or tens OOP but I will call a light 3 bet (of $45 say especially if multiple people called, anything larger that is $60 I fold JJ and lower).
MP I increase my range to KQs, KJS and AJ, ATo, but will let go of these to a 3bet. I usually over limp or open limp with KQo, KJo or just fold.
LP I overlimp or call with A2s-5s if I am getting 3-4 callers in front of me. I will over limp QJ and J10, I will, however, open raise KJ and KQs almost 100%. I will 3 bet pretty 100% Ace-10/J/Q/K type of hand, suited or offsuit, and will 3 bet with 99s plus. (KQ/J suited I will sometimes, and ONLY if I have a super tight image, if i was card dead or just showed up with monsters, I will 3 bet bluff with).
I will set mine if pot odds are good or more likely if implied odds are more than 10X (I know some people are saying it should be 15-20x or even 25x so this may be a leak). If hit a set, I play pretty straight up, if I am OOP and there is a draw heavy/wet board I will not slow play, I will bet large and I will raise OOP on a wet board 3-4x. I will check raise oop if I have a good read on my opponents if I find that they will cbet a lot. On dry boards, I will bet small OOP and Call/check in position and then turn up the heat on the turn.
I don’t play suited connectors one gappers lower than JT unless I am on the BB and I check. In limped pots I just try to follow the rule of never going broke in a limped pot and I always try to play mathematically and usually fold second or third pair even if I hit if a bunch of people call in front of me (unless I got a draw and I am getting the pot odds for it).
I play pretty ABC post flop, if I hit, I will bet usually around 66-75% of pot, if I miss and I am in a position with hands like A/K I will call one street usually. If I was the original 3bet/raiser with 10s+ and an Ace or a king comes on the board (high cards good for my range) I will usually fire once or twice. Generally, I will C bet only if I hit the flop or if the turn will bring me the nuts/better equity (for example I have Ace 2 of spades and it is 8s/10/s/Kc). I fold TPTK to a 3X raise 90% when the opponent is likely to have a set or two pair, the 10% of the time I call when I do NOT block any draws (say there is an ace high board with two spades and I do NOT have Ace or King of spades it is more likely for my opponent to have a draw; I only do this with players that are higher thinking players like 2/5 players and really good 1/3 players since I noticed they sometimes do this with their draws). Other times I call a raise is when the opponent usually was very short, to begin with, and the SPR was already around 1.5 or less.
I don’t fold a set unless I have a read that the opponent has a flush draw and it gets there and even then, it is tough for me to fold, lately I started putting a blocker bet in these scenarios in case they don’t have the nut flush, they may call instead of just shoving. idk if this is correct line of thinking. (usually, I don’t care about straight draws, usually, I focus just on flush draws but this may be a leak).
As for bankroll, I am very surprised when people recommend 50 buyins and such, it seems to me that that is waaay to much variance, I cannot see myself losing more than 10buyins or even losing 3-4 buyins with this strat (of course I may be drastically overlooking things) playing 1/3. Now that I have 20buyins plus, would this not be a good enough bankroll to play poker regularly on the weekends and be profitable?
I did try online too, but man I feel it is waaaay harder, I could not beat 10NL. Heck, even 5NL at pokerstars zoom 4 tabling I feel like I may be a slightly loosing/breakeven player. Might be doe cuz I am bored and I am not using a tracker. Feels like a much different game, wherein casino people are just sooo impatient to play (I am guessing this is because of the 2hour wait times for poker in my city).
I know it is not much info unless you see my hand histories but still, I would like the general feedback to see if I am on the right path and what I need to do to get and keep getting better at the game (how to study more efficiently, books to read)!

EDIT:

Some more info:
I try to never bluff fish and calling stations.
I am also aware of other people being aware that I am tight, so if a good player calls and he has seen me fold hands for 2 hours prior, warning bells go off when he check-raises me if it makes sense that he has hit a set (otherwise they fold to a cbet). I usually play "slippery" here and don't mind folding top pair or over pairs like aces (This is usually against players that are good and that are well aware that I am playing tight and ofcourse if we are both deep, if SPR is low enough ill ship it). To counter this, I do 3bet sometimes with King Jack/Queen suited as i mentioned to steal a pot or two if they are folding too much to my aggression and giving me too much respect.
If new plays join and they have not seen me fold that much, I can usually get them when i do hit my hand, of course, i won't be trying to 3bet bluff them because they won't have a tight image of me yet. To add to this, this is where I make money. There seems to be alot more volume in 1/3 where players come and go in a session alot more often. I find that 3/4 other guys stay at the table while the rest of the seats are rotated. Here is where I make my money, yes the other 3/4 guys know I am tight and will fold when i 3bet with my aces but the newer ones wont be as likely and will pay me off.

My Poker story p1, thoughts, and personal takeaways (long)

Hiya rpoker I wonder what the community would think about content such as my story below, writing part 2 and would share if yall like part 1, enjoy.

Intro and about meself:
I always liked the feeling of throwing some personal history out to be forever immortalized by floating even as a dust speck inside one of humanity’s most brilliant creations, the interwebz, and so here it is. I’m a 27yr old Canadian player who only plays live, currently still in school and taking poker very opportunistically. Coming from a chess and sports background, I have always been competitive. I have been playing live poker for just unde a year; it is during this time that I grew and molded myself into the player that I am now. Current I consider myself a below average reg in the live 2-5 scene that's offered locally. It is by shitty life chances and choices I discovered Poker when I was 17, played very recreationally in the 4 years since, tossed in around 3000$, never studied the game, just one of pokerstar’s many fish and losing drooling noobs.
Steping into the live Poker scene:
Never having touched real chips since playing online 8 years ago, it was always on the to-do list for a friend and I to play live in a local casino, and luckily we have one with a proper card room. In that 1-2 experience, we both lost our 200$ buy in relatively quickly, but it sparked something in me. A few months after that experience (just under a year ago) I went and stepped in the scene myself. I took out 1000$ in cash and would set it to be my bankroll. To summarize this 1000$ experience, I was overbluffing all-ins. Not knowing about the stationy tendencies of live 1-2 players I quickly lost the money as an action fish. Experience was gained and lessons were learned and I still had the drive and will to try and beat the game or atleast make my money back. I set aside another 2000$ and told myself that if ever I lose it all I would be done with live poker forever. Playing as a tigher fish this time, not overbluffing as much, but due to lack of knowledge and falling into beginners fallacies such as always slowplaying the nuts and calling it down I soon found myself stuck with my last 500$ of the second investment. It was during summer holidays for students and I made my way to the casino to finalize my poker fate. It would be a Monday I would never forget. Sitting at the table would be Zeus. He would fight to win almost every single hand by shoving, resulting in constant rebuys of 200$s. Regular actions would be that people fold/limp to him, he would raise to 25 with a single green chip toss, and all in soon to follow. The way he played was just short of buying in for the max and shoving 100bbs blind pre. What’s also to note that he was very sleepy. He would fall asleep during a hand only to have the dealer wake him up and tell him that it’s his action. I have never seen anything like it. I developed a plan, which was to see as many cheap flops as I can and evaluate post-flop. From 250$ buy in I was down to 160$ from call/fold trying to spike a hand against the maniac. Then this hand came, was button with AKo, Zeus opens 25 utg1 and I make it 77$. Folds to him who announces call, and promptly falls asleep in his chair. Dealer probes him to wake up and put the chips in the middle. It took a long minute before getting him to wake up and the first thing he does was to toss his cards into the muck, awarding me 77$ from him uncontested. The two hours to follow was the biggest run good of my life. I made hands and have Zeus bluff me all-in winning 200$ at a time. He dumped around 5000$ that day, and left after the two hours. I was up 1000$ and went home with a smile.
Getting better at the game:
I studied many hours of poker at home after that experience. What I meant by study was just to watch high stakes poker more observantly and watching how the pros played. No guidance, just a monkey see monkey do kind of learning. If I could go back and meet my then-self I would slap him so hard for thinking that I was ‘legit learning’ from watching, as much of what I saw was hard to apply in my own game. I still got better, my biggest takeaway step on getting better is to “Fold more often pre, raise less often as bluffs, call less often, and if being put in a tough spot, FOLD”. I started producing small winning sessions at 1-2, starting to identify the fish and regs at the table, understood player tendencies such as OMCs and calling stations, etc. I would never forget my first value all-in on riv which got called, had QQ on a T high paired board got called by guy with AT. It sounds comically standard now but it was a proud moment for me and it felt really encouraging to see studies and efforts paying off. The second big break for me came playing one casual Friday afternoon. Started playing around 2pm and went into 9pm with an even stack starting the day. Mind you I still had no idea that playing at different days and hours would yield different game types but at that day starting 9pm, I received a mixture of rungood and a taste of super Friday night poker. Events include getting paid 2 streets while flopping a straight flush, turning nuts and getting shoved on, 3 streets value with Top pair top kicker etc. From my Iphone timestamp, at 4am I was sitting with a 1400$ stack from my initial 300 on a 1-2 which to me felt absolutely insane. I had never stayed up this late playing but the universe kept giving me reasons to stay. Plenty of times I wanted to get up and leave but a seeming rich/drunk dude would sit down, and I would tell myself to ‘try n earn bit more’ and it would work out. During this time, my table merged with another and a reg with also a 1000$ stack sat directly to my left. We chatted quite a bit and I was not shy to admit my excitement of first time staying up this late playing poker on a Friday night and seeing all this amazing amazing action going on. He was friendly and told me many truths about the scene which included how Friday night games would much softer, and that best way to get paid is to set-mine and value-raise etc. In the meantime, I see him glaring at my chips in position while half asleep knowing that he plans to take advantage of an amateur like me. Few hours later I would catch him in a big bluff with AT on JT986 board for a 700$ pot and he instantly started calling me names and would stop chatting with me for rest of the night. He got no bluff action from me the rest of the night and my stack just grew. By 8am our table broke and I racked up 2195$ in 3 racks and I felt like the biggest winner there ever was, even got the floor to take pics of me posing by my stack it felt great. Ran into traffic going home, went to local grocery store carefully picked up a cheap 5$ wrap for breakfast before going home and crashing at 11am.
TLDR: Got into live poker as a challenge, a year ago, almost decided to quit before catching a big break. As a result of said break, studied the game further, improved my game, and saw encouraging results. Caught another break which is the gold mine that is Friday night live poker and story of my first night there.

If this is true, could be gigantic.

Being bored on a cold Friday night after having dental work and maybe it's the hydro-codone kicking in, but I may have connected a few dots that would be SUPER bullish if they prove to play out.

Tracking and Analysis App Recommendations (Pokerstars)

I'm online in Play Money quite a bit, and occasionally venture to the casino for some IRL 1/2 NLHE. Lately I have been thinking of making the move into microstakes real money on Pokerstars.
Lately I have been observing real-money tables, and the betting strategies lead me to believe that the players are using some sort of real-time calculating app to guide their betting strategy. For example, in Play Money, you might see raises in multiples of the BB, or 1/2 pot bets, but in Real Money, it seems like the value of the bets are oddball sums.
For example, I saw a $1/2 game where the opener bet something like $4.68, and then got raised to $9.21.
I would also like to be able to track my history, as well as keep logs on opponent strategies, in case I see them at another table in the future.
So is there an analytical and recording app that integrates into PokerStars live and real-time, that can give me odds and equity calculations, without having to enter the data as I play?

Hello everyone,

My name is Patrick and most recently I was a game developer for Amaya (the parent company of pokerstars.com), where I wrote online casino software.

I'm working on a personal project, a JavaScript-based peer-to-peer poker game that uses Bitcoin (including testnet3), for betting. It uses strong cryptography in place of traditional centralized (third-party) services and works in any ECMAScript 2017 compatible browser, using Node.js proxy services to overcome some of those browsers' limitations.

I would greatly appreciate your feedback on what I've built so far and ask only that you please be kind with your comments and suggestions.

The live demo can be found here: https://monicanagent.github.io/cypherpoker.js/demo/web/

The GitHub repository is here: https://github.com/monicanagent/cypherpoker.js

I'll be using Electron to package everything into an all-in-one desktop solution but CypherPoker.JS can currently be deployed to any hosting services, including free ones such as Zeit or Heroku. The software comes with an optional remote database (MySQL) component for account data retention and proxy services state restoration.

There is a pretty lengthy roadmap ahead for the project (on GitHub), and an even longer history behind it. I won't bore you with the details except to say that it's backed by many years of professional experience, research, and elbow grease. The demo above will testify to the fact that my UI/UX design experience is my weakest attribute but hopefully the heart and soul I've poured into this project will show.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

[Story / Long Read ] The tale of how I've progressed as a poker player across 2014 and what lessons you can learn from me.

Hi /Poker, I'd like to share how I've progressed as a player across this year, some of my achievements and what I've learnt. My intention in writing is to provide an insight into how I've learnt some key lessons by the means of my experiences. Some may regard this post as a brag, however I do not wish it to come across as so, instead I wish it to inspire some people to take my advice, which I have learnt the hard way. I've included a 'to lazy; didn't read' (TL;DR) at the end of this for those who want to skip the history and see the main points.
To give a bit of background, I first learnt poker when I was 11 years old, playing at home games and sitting beside my dad while he played online till I was ~15. Between 15-17 I played a ton of freerolls on every poker site available. I won ~$600 ish across these two years, my biggest bink being 1st / 9,000 on a PartyPoker $1250 freeroll back in the days for $250ish. I learnt from playing play money and lots of freeroll tournaments as well as through extensive reading at the time. I never played real money till I was 18 in fear of my winnings being invalidated due to my age. At 18 I grinded 2NL, 19 5NL. At 20, I became (and still am) president of the poker society at my university. At the start of my first year I invested in HM2 and played various Multi-table-tournaments of $1-3 buyins and 3-tabled 5nl (static, not zoom). I grew a $0 bankroll on Stars to ~$750 helped by a 2nd place bink (/10K) in the Hot $0.50 for $500 odd from 2011-2013, never depositing, by the end of 2013.
This year, 2014, has been a vast turning point in my poker career. Throughout January I became versed in grinding online, learning to multitable efficiently. I did so by playing heads-up-hyper $3.50s and $7.00s, playing about 1,200 3.50s (~4%ROI) and 600 7s (~3.5%ROI) [I would post results but I don't have them on this computer].
In February I won a freeroll tournament in my local casino (Rainbow, Bristol, UK) for a seat in their £220 Masters tournament (£25K GTD) later that month. During the three weeks I had to prepare for this tournament, I spent hours and hours slaving over MTT strategy, reading books etc. On the first day of the event I was kind of shocked on how bad the players were, at the time this tournament was huge in respect to my lowly bankroll and I believed players that spent £220 to enter this tournament would be far, far better given that £220 for me was a small fortune as I only had £40 a week to live off each week at Uni (I hadn't truly played live in a casino till this point). I managed to survive day 1, win 3 flips on day 2 and get to the final table. On the final table, the players were still awful, all were asking to deal 8-ways or something stupid, I was one of two players that said no. It ended up getting down to 4-way and I held another flip, knocking someone out and becoming the chip leader. Soon after, I looked at the screen displaying the tournament statistics on my left and saw I was guaranteed £4,970, at this point I realised that this was serious... The next three hands, I screwed up, the money and pressure got to me, each hand I played absolutely awfully and by the third, I was bust. At the time, I took the 3rd place money and banked it straight away, not even splashing out on anything. I didn't play poker for the next two months, I was heartbroken that I was unable to take the £9.5k first prize down, mulling over my mistakes and depressed that the three weeks of solid effort I put in was thrown out the window when it really mattered with only 3 people left when the money (and glory) was right there in front of me.
Come the start of May (through to June), I picked up playing on the odd Sunday as a break from revising for exams. I managed to bink a $1+R ($30K GTD) for 4th for $2K, losing when it was 5-way. I lost a 20.8bb stack to a 21bb chipleader (AKs < KQo) when the other three had 3bb, 5bb and 6bb on the final table. This win surprisingly rekindled some of the sadness and pessimism I had for poker at the time as I realised that my results are going to be subject to a huge amount variance and that I can't always blame myself for being unable to always come first or show a profit. I realised that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to put in more volume, effort and give great diligence to overcome variance in the longterm.
Throughout July, I started looking at 2+2, /poker and looking at training videos to learn to improve. I took someone's advice to start grinding satellites into bigger tournaments on PokerStars since they appeared to have a great ROI if played correctly. At the start I had great success, binking the odd $215 ticket for a Sunday Major (Million, Supersonic etc.). However, I started running terribly. I knew enough about push/fold ranges at the time to expect to obtain a healthy ROI on these satellites/satty MTTs. However the run bad didn't stop. Day-by-day I would lose. I was running horrendously below EV (I was just under breakeven, source: HM2 on old computer). I started to play tournaments outside my bankroll to compensate these losses and of course this backfired, leaving my bankroll I grinded from absolutely nothing – to short of $2.25k – to ruin. (See my Sharkscope: from the 2k hand mark to the 4,430 one ; http://www.sharkscope.com/#Player-Statistics//networks/PokerStars/players/Fitzyferret )
At the start of August I realised that I needed to take some space from online and review the fundamentals: bank roll management (BRM), tilt and coping under pressure. I was jobless and had the summer to kill before I went back to University so I decided to take £2K I had from my February bink and attempt to make a living playing at my local casino playing £1 / 1. Things started going well, and better, to excellent. I devoted each day in my holiday playing and learning. I took notes of hands, posted a few online and asked others to evaluate my play. I even started making a journal of the live regulars I used to play against. This comprehensive: playing, evaluating, learning, and incorporating back into play seemed to work! I learnt BRM in many ways, through learning basic budgeting, tracking my results, enforcing stop-losses during play etc. I coped with tilt/pressure by initially just writing out my distress, looking back on it the next day, seeing what the common trends were. For example I found that it was 'card dead-ness' was a particular problem for me during live play, I managed to overcome this through adopted a 'coping strategy'. This was where I imagined I was in the shoes of a particular individual in a hand, thought about their range, other villains' ranges, their tells and the dynamic between opponents. This not only helped me overcome my boredom but improved my own exploitative play against them in future hands and hand reading. At the end of this 5 days a week for 11 weeks schedule, I made £6,680 profit between Aug-Sep. I learnt a ton about live play and essentially started to crush it [ http://tinypic.com/zoge9c/8 ] [ http://tinypic.com/200y6uu/8 ]
/chipporn : [ http://tinypic.com/iw0uft/8 ] [ http://tinypic.com/346kvuh/8 ]
September to November, I've been only dabbling and putting in only small sessions (~8 hours/week average) since I am back at University. I've converted to playing full-ring (9-handed) cash to fit my experience I had during my time at the casino. I 4-table zoom with occasionally 2-6 static tables on the side as well. I deposited for the first time, $250 on Stars, started with 5nl again, then 10nl, then 25nl. I've recently been taking shots at 50nl, but will try and get some more hands in first before I feel confident in doing so. Here's my cash graph as it stands: [ http://tinypic.com/2a0hnid/8 ]. I attribute my fairly rapid acceleration in these stakes to my thorough reviewing process (and running good). Once a week, I look at all my hands in the past week where I have lost the greatest amount of bigblinds (top 5%), and make the judgement “was the reason I lost a completely unavoidable cooler?”.
I make great emphasis on whether it was completely unavoidable as I find that you can get away from so called 'coolers' fairly easily if you have enough experience of certain spots. I collect these improvements, make trends of what I have observed and eventually overcome these problems by overcoming them through observation.
At the start of November to now, I have grown fonder of single-table tournaments and am playing these more so than cash now. I haven't got the greatest of sample on them so far, but it's looking pretty promising [ http://tinypic.com/2rwm690/8 ]. As well, on Sundays I now grind the satellites into the larger tournaments as the field is often exceptionally soft. (Hand 4,431 onwards on sharkscope).
So looking towards 2015, I have great expectations for my poker 'career'. I might not have much time between now and until I hand in my dissertation to play much, though I still plan to play a few hours a week at least online and a few large live MTTs (£100-250) in the mean time. I hope to reach 50nl by July at least. I will also commit to being a more active member in poker communities. In this upcoming summer I also hope to play live cash again for 2 months as a 'job' to boost my bankroll again, getting a part-time job as well to have definite income on the side. After this time, I will make a decision to pursue poker further or not, dependent on whether I perceive that I can make enough to rely on it as an income. I'm hesitant to say I have plans on going “pro”, but rather I would say I would like to see myself at least becoming “semi-professional”.
Earnings from 1st January to 5th December 2014:
TL;DR - Lessons I've learnt that you should to in order to become a better player.
I'd like so say thanks to cwlrs for recommending /poker, suggesting I should write this and being someone I can attribute some of my success to.
Thanks for reading, especially if you managed all of it,
Fitzyferret

Full AMA:
July 7, 2017 Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:02 PM Hello @everyone and welcome to today's AMA! We've received a lot of questions and feedback regarding the new Stars Rewards program and we wanted to take the time to address as many of them as possible. So, on that note, it is my pleasure to introduce @Dylan | Ravageur . Dylan is the Head of Customer Loyalty at PokerStars and has overseen the transition and launch of the new Stars Rewards program. He has been with PokerStars for over 6 years and is here to answer your questions today
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:04 PM Hi Pete, thanks for having me on here. Looking forward to diving in to the questions and will do my best to provide some answers.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:06 PM Welcome welcome  I know you've been crazy busy putting this whole thing together, so let's jump straight in with some of the harder ones so that we can address them while our brains are still fresh... "PokerStars hate winning players and is doing everything to destroy online poker and turn it into casino? Do you really think your customers don’t understand what you’re doing? Shame on you"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:11 PM Oof, jumping right into the deep end I see. Well here we go...
We designed Stars Rewards to offer better rewards to net-depositing players than winning players as these players ultimately drive the poker economy. We want to encourage players to win at the table using their skill rather than playing primarily to maximise returns. One of the main differences between this program and the VIP Club system is that it ensures that volume is not a decisive factor like it was in the past to receive meaningful rewards.
It's not that we don't love winning poker players - we do. However, there's a difference between appreciating and celebrating winning poker players versus giving them additional rakeback on their winnings. A lot has changed over the course of eleven years since the VIP Club was first designed, and the online poker landscape is a different place now that needs a new program that better serves our diverse customer base. Since we implemented the changes in 2016 to reduce rewards for the highest-volume players, more hands are seeing the flop which indicates a more appealing table-dynamic and deposits are lasting longer for new and casual players. We no longer believe that the previous approach which allocated the majority of the rewards to winning high-volume players is the right direction for us.
I appreciate that this is not what many of you want to hear, and the significance of these changes is not lost on us. Our goal is to grow poker as a whole and a new and better designed rewards program is an important step towards achieving this.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:13 PM So, in simple terms, the goal is to keep net-depositing players playing the game, adding more money to the economy?
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:14 PM Put very simply, yes. The goal is to engage and retain new and casual depositing players, who are ultimately the backbone of the poker economy.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:16 PM Ok, thanks for the clarity there  We'll move swiftly on to another tough one... "Will PokerStars pocket the rakeback decrease or will it just be more distributed to losing players?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:20 PM I am already sensing a trend....
The overall percentage will decrease for poker. Casino and sportsbook will of course see an increase as they're giving more rewards where they previously hadn't. Loyalty remains our most significant spend as a company and we will continue to invest in the development and engagement of our players. We invest in poker far more than anybody else and we play to continue to invest in our innovations and our marketing. We announced this week that we are picking up the tab for 60,000 PKR customers left in the cold without their bankrolls, we've hired Usain Bolt and Kevin Hart to reach out beyond the current poker base to bring new people to the game, and with the launch of PokerStars PowerUp, a new poker product, we are again trying to bring in new players to the game and reactivate players.
This kind of stability & resilience comes at a price, but we believe these changes are working. The company and the ecosystem is healthier, and we believe recreational players are having more fun.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:23 PM Well then, that leads perfectly on to "I see people justifying the changes by saying it goes to recs yet I haven’t seen stats that they say the same amount of rakeback is being paid out?" asked by @Gosha(edited)
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:28 PM Because the program is personalised to each player, I don't think I'll be able to satisfy that question. I can share that most of our recreational players will receive a similar level of rewards as before, and in many cases players will receive more rewards.
I've heard a lot of players in the questions thread claiming that the program only offers 5% in rewards, but recreational players will receive much more than that and this is across the full spectrum of our player base. As an example, there are former Supernova VIPs who are now receiving more with Stars Rewards than they did in our previous program.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:30 PM Ah, that somewhat addresses my next question already "Can we get a tangible figure for RB now that the new rewards are in place? Party does 40%"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:34 PM Yes I think it does. The short answer is that Stars Rewards is not a traditional rakeback program. Rewards are personalised and can vary based on recent activity.
We cannot guarantee a specific level of rewards for any given player givena few factors:
-The rewards inside Chests are randomised -Progress bar requirements are personalised and may change based on recent activity. For example, a long-term winning player will need to earn more reward points to unlock a given Chest than a net-depositing player -Players receive additional reward points in Chests which are also randomised -Players who play more frequently will benefit from boosts, which net you double reward points when boosted.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:38 PM Given the untraditional nature of the Rewards program, people are finding it hard to find ways to compare it to the old one, maybe you can help with this? "Hey, greetings! My question as i have not yet understood ( and dont think it has been specified at all), is what is the ev of rakeback that the company is giving back? I understand that rewards are randomized and for 1 chest people can get different rewards depending on their vip status. But what i dont understand is how ev rakeback should a goldstar or a silverstar for instance expect to get on 1 month? with the previous system , to say , we knew a goldstar could get minimum 100 usd per month and platinum star 300. what is the difference ev wise in the new system? Thanks"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:39 PM That's a good question. First - Stars Rewards is a significant departure from the previous VIP Club program and it's very difficult to compare the two as it's apples and oranges. In general terms if you are a long-term winning player you will be receiving less rewards than previously. Other players will be receiving a similar level of rewards, or more, with Stars Rewards.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:46 PM Since we're changing things quite drastically for the winning players, maybe you can help explain where we received our positive feedback? "I would really like to know where the positive feedback has been found regarding Stars Rewards. Since I havent heard a single positive word from people I rate highly that have gotten their rakeback slashed from 27-35% to 4-5%" This question was asked both by @BarreMolenaar "LordBarre II" and @TilTinDuCeR
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:49 PM I had a feeling this one was coming :). A lot of what is posted about the program on forums and in the press originates mostly from winning players, who understandably are upset that they are receiving fewer rewards than previously. The program is designed to appeal more to recreational players. The level of engagement we have seen with the program so far in Denmark and Italy has exceeded our expectations. We have been reaching out since those launches to speak to recreational players about their experiences with Stars Rewards and the majority prefer the new program than the previous one.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:51 PM Speaking of the launches in Italy and Denmark, we received this question about how the launches there seemed "sketchy at best"... "Why did you switch from a transparent system to a non-transparent, “individual” one? I personally believe that the poker industry especially needs to be as transparent as possible. The way this has been rolled out in Italy and Denmark so far seems sketchy at best."
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:54 PM I agree that the poker industry needs to be as transparent as possible. However, while Stars Rewards is "individual" as he says, the probabilities and prize values for each Chest are published on our website and you can see how many points you need to unlock a Chest by clicking on your progress bar or visiting the 'My Stars' portal. In addition to the 'normal' Chest values on our webpage, there will be additional top prizes on a regular basis such as the $1,000 Chests we are currently awarding for launch.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 5:56 PM A recent question from @Croakspkr which ties in well with transparency... "why cant i review how many chests i've opened yet and what i got from them?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 5:58 PM You can contact Support at any time to receive a full audit of your Chests and everything that was in them. However, I agree that it would be beneficial if you could review them in-client, so I will add this to the list of future developments we'd like to add. Thanks for the feedback/suggestion @Croakspkr
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:01 PM And this one has come in from @Artello referencing a previous question... ""As an example, there are former Supernova VIPs who are now receiving more with Stars Rewards than they did in our previous program." It doesn't sound logical at all with rewards we have, unless some regs hit 1k from chests (which is luck, not a statistic)."
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:03 PM Just to clarify, long-term winning Supernova VIPs will be receiving much less. However, there are net-depositing former Supernovas who are receiving a similar level of rewards, and in some cases more. That isn't assuming they get lucky or win a $1K Chest.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:05 PM In terms of the rewards in general, there has been a lot of feedback regarding how different the size and frequency of the rewards are compared to what people are used to. That feedback has been accurately summed up by @IFlipBurgers in this question: "Do you believe that rewarding people with extremely small rewards (compared to the buyin of the games they play) at a high frequency gives them satisfaction and make them feel like a valued customer? So far, I've only heard feedback of people feeling insulted by these rewards and would go as far as to argue that they have a negative net effect on their playing experience, even compared to not receiving anything at all."
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:09 PM Unlike the previous program, Stars Rewards aims to reward players multiple times within a single session. Most of our players can only play a few times a month and we feel that offering them multiple opportunities to win something significant does, in fact, make them feel valued. Of course, there's no "one-size fits all" and some players would rather receive fewer Chests but that held a higher value, so there is a balance to be maintained. Like any other new product, we will be reviewing feedback from all our players and looking at the numbers to determine if we've found the right balance between frequency and value.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:11 PM That leads perfectly into "Are rewards completely finalised or are they very much experimental and subject to change?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:13 PM The rewards could change over time, yes, especially in regards to our top prizes. Currently we're awarding $1K Chests as the top prize, but, for example, when WCOOP comes around later this year Stars Rewards can award WCOOP tickets in Chests. In the future, these top prizes will change and can range from cash prizes, tickets, and exclusive physical items. FailFish1
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:15 PM Okay! Thank you very much for digging into some of the nitty gritty about EV and reward amounts with me, now I'm going to address some of the questions we've received about how everything functions We received this question "hey, im fairly sure i was on like 80% towards 2k vpp and didnt receive anything for it. isnt it supposed to convert? is this a problem more people ran into or just me" from @don artie , perhaps you could clarify?
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:17 PM Good question, and that shouldn't be the case. Players received the full prorated StarsCoin value for their in-progress VIP Step when Stars Rewards launched. You can verify having received this credit by going to your StarsCoin audit in Tools -> History & Stats of the desktop client. You can also just shoot our Support an email and they can check on your behalf and makes sure that you received everything you should have.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:20 PM Thank you for clearing that up  Now, in terms of the exact functionality, @Scoobydubious asked: "When you open your chests, what are the coins for that go to the right side of the chest? I think theymight be purple if I recall correctly."(edited)
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:22 PM Purple?!! They are green, and those are reward points  You get reward points everytime you open a Chest, so that your progress towards your next one gets kick-started. In poker you earn 100 reward points for every $1 in rake/tournament fees paid with the exception of high-stakes cash games.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:23 PM On that note, from @Caribou "What is the least amount of points necessary to clear a red chest? How many points, on average, will net depositors need to clear a red chest?"
Dylan | Ravageur- Yesterday at 6:28 PM That's a good one. Reward point requriements can vary over time, but for example, some higher-volume recreational players need to earn 8,000 reward points to unlock our biggest Platinum Chest. They will also receive on average 800 points every time they open it. Some of these also receive a boost of 4,000 points every 8 hours from their last one. Effectively, they need to earn 3,200 reward points to earn their first Platinum Chest each day (which is worth about $23.50 on average).
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:33 PM So in terms of this being more weighted for net-depositing recreational players @SetMiningWithKings asked "So that I can make a decision whether this is a better thing for players, or for Pokerstars - Has your average revenue per player gone up or down when you account for the new programme being in place?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:35 PM We certainly hope to increase engagement in our playerbase which ultimately should increase revenues, but it's much too early to say what the impact of Stars Rewards is given we only just launched in most areas this week!
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:38 PM In that case, asked by @TilTinDuCeR "Question: Do you think you as a company understand the gaming industry enough to try to emulate it and accurately project the success of such endeavour?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:42 PM There has been a massive amount of effort and research across the company in preparing for Stars Rewards based on years of data and experience in the industry. We're confident that this is a step in the right direction, and early indications in Denmark and Italy support this as well. So I guess in short, yes. But we are of course also listening to our players on all our channels (here, other forums, social media, customer support, 1-1 discussions, etc.)
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:46 PM Speaking of feedback from the players, we're seeing a lot of people asking for a more specific breakdown of what they need to do to earn their chests. "is there anywhere we can check the least and the most points requiered for a certain chest?" from @monroymx
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:48 PM Each individual can always click on the progress bar to see how many reward points they need to unlock a Chest. However, because these targets can vary over time based on recent activity, they aren't being published.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:50 PM Ok, good to know that it's easy for people to see what they need to do then  Let's burn through another couple of quick ones and then wrap this thing up so I don't leep you all night. "Will players be able to weed out the rewards that they will never use?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:53 PM If I remember correctly that question was referencing not wanting to recievemore than one freeroll ticket in a day. This is a great suggestion and something that we are actively looking to add to Stars Rewards functionality. Ideally once you receive, for example, a freeroll ticket for a weekly freeroll, you shouldn't receive the same ticket until the following week (and that prize would be replaced by something that isn't redundant). It's on our list of future developments that we'd like to add, and I hope we can add it in the coming months.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:55 PM So, to quickly summarise a question that is being asked a lot, are there any plans to decrease rake? Spin and Go's and PLO seem to be mentioned a lot here "With such reduction in rewards to SN Winning players, is there a chance that (for example) Spin and go rake might be decreased a bit to compensate, because as of it is today, average 60$ limit player regular was earning around 44% of his overall profits from rakebacks, because there are a lot of regulars in the pool, only a handful of crushers get better results (in chipEV) than that to stay comfortable withouth rakeback" Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 6:57 PM That's a popular question. We are constantly evaluating pricing and the economy of each game. However, at this time there are no plans to decrease rake.
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 6:57 PM That being the case... "Wouldn’t they be making more money if they brought back the old vip system which incentivized volume players coming back = more rake being paid?"
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 7:02 PM This is a good question as there are quite a lot of misconceptions out there on this topic. There is a very high overlap between "volume players" and "winning players". This is pretty intuitive given poker is a skill game and you improve the more you play. The poker economy is fuelled by deposits, which for the most part originate from low to medium-volume players. This is one of the main reason that the level of rewards players receive through Stars Rewards is not solely based on volume, so that we can allocate rewards to the players who contribute the most to the poker economy (and of course, our company).
Pete Simm | Ice3lade - Yesterday at 7:05 PM Thank you for explaining that  Ok, I hope that this session has helped to clear things up for a few people, @Dylan | Ravageur thank you very much for taking the time out of your day to do this with us. I know that we haven't managed to address everything which we've been asked, but Dylan will be around throughout the coming week to hop in here and answer more FAQ as they arise. If there are an absolute tonne of questions, we will schedule a second AMA for some time next week
Dylan | Ravageur - Yesterday at 7:08 PM Sure - thanks for having me Pete and I appreciate all the questions and feedback from the players. I know that not everyone will love the answers, but I'll continue to chime in here next weeek to try and answer questions as they come up. Sure - I'd be down to do this again. Cheers.
