Introduction

I'm pretty new to the series, picking up my first heavy save file within the last couple of months. I have 200 hours and have done most of everything, taking me to end game. I realize the game changes often, so a lot of helpful resources are somewhat out of date. I wanted to add a little of the knowledge I've gained to help out anyone who might be stuck or for newbies who want a better grasp of the game. I skipped a lot of the stuff that's easier to search for.

About No Man's Sky

So what is this game all about?

• The best way I've seen it described as next-level Minecraft in space. If you're the type of person who likes games where you collect resources, craft a bunch of stuff, build your own base, etc. you will love this game. Same if you love exploration, discovery and hoarding tons of items. If you're looking to scratch a competitive itch, it may not be the game for you (although you can kill lots of stuff).

Do I need to follow the main storyline?

• I mean, only if you want to. The storyline is like 1/16th of this game, imo. You can do just about everything without completing any of the story missions. If you're lost and unsure of what to do, the storyline is a great start. (This may need to be verified, perhaps you might have to do a couple of the starting missions first to progress naturally).

Basics

Is there any way for me to get fancy blueprints other than the Construction Terminal and/or tutorial quest?

• YES. I didn't know this until way too long because the game doesn't make it super clear. If you want to build something but you need a blueprint that you don't have, it's most likely going to be on The Anomaly (which you can summon from space, anywhere) on the Construction Research Station (different from the Construction Terminal you place on your base). Each blueprint costs Salvaged Technology to unlock. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of the quests that have you interact with your Base Computer and hire Terminal Staff, they reward the same blueprints for 'free' as you can buy in the Anomaly.

Does it ever get easiecost less fuel to take off in my Starship?

• YES! It gets way easier. I don't even remember the last time I fueled my Launch Thrusters. To improve this dramatically, make sure to buy Starship Tech from the Anomaly and install up to 3 S-Class modules per inventory (general/tech). I can freely fly around as much as I want with little care in the world and it didn't take that long to get to that point.

How can I collect more of [resource]?

• If it is a basic resource like carbon, tritium or phosphorus, your best bet is to buy out a space station that carries the resource. For more rare resources I like to keep a paper list of which resources are stocked in which stations.
  
• If it is a mineral you can buy it or make a base on a planet that has the mineral and build a Mineral Extraction Unit and some Silos.
  
• If it is a gas you can buy it or make a base on a planet that has the gas and build a Gas Extraction Unit and some Silos.
  
  • Also keep in mind, gasses refine to other gasses at a 3:1 ratio, or combined with other items using a Large Refiner for a 1:1 ratio.
• If it is a Harvested Agricultural Substance, you can build Biodomes to harvest just that one resource in bulk.
  
  • You can also plant them outside if you’re in the right Biome.
  • If you still don’t have enough, learn the element that goes along with the substance (like Cactus Flesh/Pyrite) and refine them together, which will create a little extra of each substance.
• If it is an Animal Byproduct (milk, eggs, berries), find a planet with a lot of different fauna and camp out somewhere with a Nutrient Processor. Craft a ton of Creature Pellets and Bait specific for that animal and throw them around, trying to round up the other creatures on the outskirts of your radius.
  
  • Note: The Nutrient Processor has its own inventory called Ingredients Storage. This inventory can be accessed by any Nutrient Processor you build, which is great for stocking up on stuff you’ll need on-the-go.
  • Note: Keep in mind that Bait only stacks up to 5, so you’ll save yourself some slots by only crafting as much as you need at one time.
• If you still can’t find it, download the app called Assistant for No Man's Sky which will show you where to source an item and what you can refine to get it (if possible).
  

What is Quicksilver and what can I do with it?

• Quicksilver is a currency which can be used to purchase special titles and cosmetics, as well as a Void Egg (which eventually spawns a Living Ship).
  
• You get Quicksilver for one Nexus mission per day. These quests must be completed in one go, so if you crash or exit the game, you will need to pick up a new Quicksilver mission at the Anomaly. At this time you can get up to 250 Quicksilvemission.
  
• All Nexus missions can be completed in multiplayer. I wouldn't advise soloing them if you’re a brand new player but once you get some decent upgrades and familiarize yourself with the quest types, it’s no problem at all to solo.
  

What is Tainted Metal and how can I find it?

• Tainted Metal is a currency that can be used at Scrap Dealers to buy some cosmetics and X-class upgrades. Currently Tainted Metal can only be found on Derelict Freighters.

Teleporting

Where can I find teleporters?

• Every Space Station has a teleporter.
• The Anomaly has a teleporter.
• You can build them on your base (but they require power).
• You can build one on your freighter.

How does teleporting work?

• Teleporting is like fast-travel. You can go to any place that you have visited before within reason. I believe the teleporter holds the last 50 bases and space stations you have visited. There are certain places you cannot teleport to:
  
  • The Anomaly
  • Your Freighter

Can I go back to my base if I forgot to place a teleporter?

• YES. You can teleport TO any on your bases from any teleporter, but you can only teleport FROM that planet if you build a teleporter and it has sufficient power.

Note: Space Stations only appear on your teleporter if you have actually landed on the Station and (?) gotten out of your Starship.

Base Building

How can I expand my base (to reach a hotspot)?

• Open the build menu, choose an item you wouldn’t be able to build unless you had a base (like a flag or a battery) and walk away from your base toward the area you want to expand in. Once you see the build menu ‘revert’ to away-from-base status (it will show less options), step back a few until you see it reappear. Reselect your item and build it right at the edge. This should automatically expand your base’s radius. If you are unable to build still, place a save beacon and save your game. Then, reload and try again.

How many solar units should you attach to a battery?

• For me, having two solar units per one battery has worked.

How can I make sure my base stays powered overnight via solar?

• Connect everything up to your grid and look at the max grid size. Your total power generation needs to be at least 2x your grid size. If you hook up two solar panels per battery, you can't go wrong this way.

I'm running out of electricity, but I'm already using an Electromagnetic Generator

• Simple solution: build more generators, as close to the center of the hotspot as you can. The generators need to be connected to each other to be considered part of the 'grid'.

I'm having trouble finding a specific hotspot type (electro/gas/mineral)

• The best way I've found is to turn the audio up and listen for cues. If a hotspot isn't showing up on your scanner, if you listen you can tell which direction to go by the sound effect. It will be very faint and quiet. Just center yourself toward the sound and sprint/jet in that direction, periodically checking the scanner.
  
  • Sometimes I've noticed that it's easiest if you discover all hotspots in the area. For example, if you're looking for an electromagnetic one and it's not nearby, sometimes you need to locate the mineral & gas hotspots first.
  • Note: Some mineral-specific or gas-specific hotspots are a pain in the butt to find. If the resource is listed on the planet info (you can press F and look up at the sky to see planet info) there will be hotspots for that element/mineral. For gasses, it's based on planet type. If you look at that article, you can check if you're in the 'right' place for a particular gas.
  • For this reason, if you're building a base for the purpose of extracting resources, I recommend locating the specific hotspot of choice first. Remember, if you can't reach an electromagnetic hotspot (or don't want to go to the trouble of expanding your base to reach one), you can always power stuff with solar panels.
  Pro-tip: Easy base build: Build a large square or round building and you can fit 5 solar and 3 batteries inside, they auto click into place. You can even build it underground. It is more than enough to power a basic base and save having to run wires around so long as the buildings are connected. As your base gets bigger just build more as your foundations.
  

Exploration

How do I get an Atlas Pass (v1, v2, v3) and what do they do?

• You craft an Atlas Pass yourself, with a blueprint that you find in Manufacturing Facilities. With the v2, you can open the red lootable canisters and some (?) doors at places like observatories, outposts, manufacturing facilities, etc. Behind the doors are just some extra loot/lore stuff.
  
• Once you craft the v2, you no longer need v1. Once you craft v3, you no longer need v3.
  

How can I find a high economy system quickly?

• Okay, so this one blew my mind. First, you need to craft and install an Economy Scanner in your Starship.
  
• Then, you just need to go to the galactic map. See the stats when you hover over each system? Each one has a star rating (except for dead systems with no station) and if there are 3 stars, it will be a high economy one.
  

I want to get to [x] galaxy, but I don't know how.

• If you're looking for a specific galaxy, the easiest way is to hang at the Anomaly for a while and check the teleporter every so often. When you are physically near another player (and your multiplayer is on, which it is by default) you have the option to teleport to their base. When you're viewing the teleport locations, you'll see the Galaxy name under the base name like: [Eissentam Galaxy]. Then, just teleport to their base and fly into space, choose a random system and make your base there! This doesn't erase any of your bases like traveling to the center of the galaxy does.
  
• You can also check out PanGalactic StarCabs who are committed to helping players travel anywhere they want to go.
  

How do I solve the puzzles in the Observatory?

• These puzzles look something like this: 4634-6344-3446-****
  
• Solving them is easy. Find a number that only appears once, like 3. In the first 3 sections, the 3 appears in the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st places. That means the answer containing the '3' in the 4th place is correct. I suck at explaining though, so here's an article that explains it well.
  

Getting Units

Early Game:

• Go underground and scan for Humming Sacs and collect as many Albumen Pearls as you can find to sell.
• If you’re on a planet that has Vortex Cubes, you can collect & sell these as well.

Mid-Game

• Take quests from a space station. Any quest that asks you to scan objects, kill creatures, kill sentinels or fight pirates can be stacked with other similar quests from other space stations. For example, if you pick up 5 quests to kill creatures, you can knock them all out in one go. If you feel like spending time exploring an entire system, it doesn’t hurt to pick up the system-specific quests either.
  
• If you build an underwater base and do some exploring underwater, you can find Abyssal Horrors which you can shoot in the eye and kill in order to loot Hypnotic Eyes which sell for a bit.
  
• Once you’ve visited a bunch of different stations, teleport to a station and check what trade commodities they have on ‘sale’ (the maximum something will go on sale for is -80%). Buy these items and then teleport to other stations to sell them for as high of a markup as possible.
  

Late-Game

• Make use of the blueprints you learned at Manufacturing Facilities. Craft Stasis Devices and Fusion Igniter for maximum profit.

Getting Nanites

• If you’re still in early-game, the best way to get nanites is stacking quests from Space Stations. There are two easy(ish) ways to grind nanites quickly, but they rely on you knowing certain recipes and having specific resources:
  
  • Farm Abandoned Facilities for Larval Cores. Each Larval Core refines to 50 Nanites. You can find a ton of Abandoned Facilities really easily if you install the scanner on your Nomad Exocraft. It will allow you to scan specifically for these structures.
  • Craft a bunch of complex food items (the complexity is determined by how many ingredients, etc.) and visit Cronus at the Anomaly. It will take a bit of mindless clicking but you can give him a food item and he will give you between 15-500 Nanites (the wiki says 0-129 but I have definitely gotten more).
• There are some other ways to get nanites, which I'm including below but I've found they are a little more grindy to get, if you need a lot of nanites quickly.
  
  • Salvaged Technology refines to 15:1 nanites, so you can sell those once you've unlocked every blueprint.
  • Platinum refines to nanites 35:1 nanutes.
  • Pugneum refines to nanites 25:1 nanites.
  • You can interact with spheres, cubes and flat, round black sphere projectors at Space Stations and some other locations for a few nanites. Also there are wall units that look like a yellow cylinder that you can interact with for some extra.
  • Damaged Machinery awards some nanites as well.
  • Scrapping spaceships is also a decent source of nanites, because they usually give you a ton of mid-range upgrade modules.
  • You can sell any unwanted tech back to the technician for a few nanites.
  • Refine: Residual Goop > Viscious Fluids > Living Slime > Runaway Mould which refines 5:1 into nanites (but it takes FOREVER!!)

Exosuit

• Pro-tip: You can stack 3 of the same technology in both the Exosuit general and the Exosuit technology inventories. This means you can use a total of 6 S-class modules of, for example, the Movement and Shield modules.

Multi-tool

You can have up to 3 multi-tools. You cannot destroy them but you can exchange them for another multi-tool at a Space Station or Outpost. Multi-tools come in four types: pistol, rifle, experimental and alien. The latter two are the rarest. Experimentals tend to have high scanning stats and Aliens tend to have high damage. You can only see the multitool type if you are comparing yours to another.
What kind of weapon should I use?

• There are four main weapons: Scatter Blaster (close-range shotgun), Pulse Spitter (automatic), Boltcaster (semi-automatic), Blaze Javelin (charged laser). According to the wiki, the Scatter Blaster has the highest damage potential of these, followed by Pulse Splitter.

What is a secondary weapon and how do I use it?

• Secondary weapons are bound to right-click (L1) and can be set up by going to the tools menu (X on PC) and selecting a secondary weapon. The main ones are Plasma Launcher (grenade) and Geology Cannon (cannon that destroys terrain). Both of these are charged with Unstable Plasma. You can also bind the Personal Forcefield (my personal preference) which lets you project a shield with right-click that is pretty darn good at blocking damage. Alternatively, there is also the Combat Scope that lets you zoom in slightly when aiming (doesn't work with Blaze Javelin).

Pro-Tip: Since you can have up to three multi-tools (and switch between them whenever you want) it's not a bad idea to spec out certain multi-tools for certain purposes (one for high scanning/mining, one for high damage, etc.)

Starships

How can I find a new Starship?

• Starships are mainly acquired in two ways:
  
  • Use a Planetary Chart (distress signal) to find and claim crashed Starships. Not every chart will lead you to a ship, so keep trying.
  • Buy/trade directly with NPCs at Space Stations, Trading Outposts and Colossal/Planetary Archives. The latter two have a higher likelihood of getting rare and high-class ships, though.
• Pro-tip: Claim each crashed Starship you see, fix the Launch Thrusters, Shield and Pulse Drive and then fly it to a station. Don't scrap it immediately, but wait at the station to see what flies in. You can talk to any NPC standing beside a ship and see how much they'd sell it for. Find one equal to your ship's worth and trade it (this will remove all of the broken slots making it worth more). THEN, scrap it (unless you really like it) for maximum value.
  
• Note: For the special hyperdrives (cadmium, emeril and indium in that order), you only need the highest level tech installed. When you get Emeril Drive, get rid of Cadmium. When you get Indium Drive, get rid of Emeril.
  
• Note: While on a planet, you can switch your Starship view to 3rd person for a better view of the planet around you. Not recommended for space travel, though.
  

Exocrafts

What is the benefit of using an Exocraft?

• Honestly? Speed. The two Exocrafts I use the most are the Nomad and the Pilgrim. With all of the tech installed for scanners, boost modules, engine modules and acceleration modules there isn't much room for a laser and/or a cannon, much less extra inventory slots. I use them to get from point A to point B more quickly than walking, unless the destination is like more than 3 minutes away once I hop into my craft. Then, I'm just gonna fly.

How do I get an Exocraft?

• Collect a bunch of Salvaged Technology and head over to the Anomaly. You can buy it at the Construction Terminal but you have to use A/D (or arrows on PS4) to cycle to the Exocraft Technology screen. Then, you just have to buy the Geobay and construct it.

How can I use my Exocraft?

• Once you construct a Geobay, you can summon your Exocraft anywhere on the planet (by pressing X).
  
• If you don't have the Exocraft Teleporter yet, you can just carry the mats to craft the Geobay, and then if you're on a planet you want to explore but you don't wanna be tied down to one area, you can craft and immediately delete the Geobay and the Exocraft will stay, and you won't waste the resources you used to craft it.
  
• If you have the Exocraft Teleporter, just craft that and then immediately delete the base (if you wish). The only requirement is that you must have those Exocrafts built somewhere in the Galaxy.
  
• If you build the Orbital Exocraft Materialiser on your freighter, then you can summon any owned Exocrafts in any system that your freighter is in.
  

Freighters & Frigates

What exactly is a freighter and why would I want one?

• A freighter is basically a base in space. You can build rooms, storage units, a teleporter, etc. It has an inventory just like your starship which can be used to store items and install technology. You can warp your freighter around, but you can also summon it in space or from a planet (however, to go to red, green or blue systems, you will need the special hyperdrive on your Freighter for that color system.)
  
• Having a freighter lets you participate in frigate fleet missions which is basically like an idle game. You send your frigates away, and come back several hours later to collect resources.
  

How do I find more frigates?

• Pulse around space, stopping every 10 seconds or so. You should hear a loud warping noise if a freightefleet is warping nearby. Recruitable frigates are marked with a green unit symbol. Fly up to one and it will prompt you to open your communication thingy (X on PC) and you can see their stats and recruit them.

My frigates keep coming back damaged, what can I do to prevent this?

• You must create a fleet that is two (2) stars higher than the mission you are sending them on. In other words, if the mission is 3 stars, make sure your fleet comes out to 5 stars (see below for more info).

How can I max out my frigate fleets without wasting them?

• Every mission has a type (industrial, combat, discovery, exploration and balanced) and a rating (in stars). Every frigate has a number rating for each of these types. The ‘balanced’ type is looking for high numbers in each category as a whole, which means you can add multiple frigates that can bring up each stat.
  
• Buy the blueprints for the consumable upgrades. Each upgrade corresponds to a type (industrial, combat, discovery, exploration). If you’re low on frigates and need an extra boost to your fleet’s star rating, add a matching upgrade (or three) and watch the stars increase!
  

How can I get frigate fleet consumables without crafting them?

• Sentinel Starships can be summoned by aggroing sentinels on a planet and then flying into space. Destroying them rewards the consumable fleet upgrades for combat and trade missions.

I want a freighter ASAP and I don’t care what rank it is.

• Warp to a few new systems. The magic number seems to be around 5. Eventually, you will be met with a Space Battle where you have to defend a freighter against a bunch of pirates. If you complete this, you can land on the freighter at the end and the captain will offer you the ship for free (only if you don't already have one), but it will almost always be a C-class. You can also keep refusing the offer until you get a Frigate that you like.

I want a Nice freighter OR I already have one but I want a new one.

• Pulse around space, stopping every 10 seconds or so. You should hear a loud warping noise if a freightefleet is warping nearby. Fly to the capital ship icon (white freighter icon) and land. Then, you can go upstairs and talk to the captain who will offer you the freighter for a fee.

What happens to my old freighter when I exchange it?

• It goes poof. Make sure you clean it out (manually destroy rooms for parts) before exchanging it!
  
• Inventory can be manually swapped over (ONLY from the freighter inventory) at the time of comparing/buying the new ship.
  
• You will lose any special tech you have unlocked on the freighter but you will not lose any blueprints/colors you’ve unlocked at the terminal.
  

How do I find more Salvaged Frigate Modules?

• The most consistent place I've seen them is as awards from Derelict Freighters (sometimes), Crashed Freighters (less often), and most frequently, in cargo pods in space. Shooting cargo pods makes you lose rep with the faction that owns the system, though. It also summons space police. If you don't wanna fight them, you can summon the Anomaly to get out. If you're like me and hoarded Vykeen Effigies and other rep-boosting items, you can always spam NPCs with them at Space Stations to raise your rep. Supposedly shooting the pods attached to Freighters don't make you lose rep but that hasn't been my personal experience.

How do I get the Matter Transmitter and why should I get it ASAP?

• The Matter Transmitter is available for purchase on your Freighter. It costs 5 Salvaged Freighter Modules which aren't super common. If you save up though, the Matter Transmitter allows you to access your freighter's inventory along with all of your storage units on your freighter in any system your Freighter is currently in. No more rushing to build a Storage Unit and power it up on some random planet in order to grab some obscure resource you need for whatever reason.

Derelict Freighters

How can I find a Derelict Freighter?

• Once a week, summon the Anomaly and talk to Iteration Helios. He is in the room downstairs with Ares and Cronus behind a counter. He will give you a Broadcast Receiver that you can use in space to find a derelict freighter.
  
• Once you have built up enough units, it’s cheap enough to buy coordinates directly from scrap dealers at space stations. They are $5 mil a pop for the first of the day, and after you can buy another but they go up in price. If it won’t let you talk to the scrap dealer, you need to do quests to level up your standing with the Mercenaries Guild.
  

Manufacturing Facilities

What are the blueprints for at Manufacturing Facilities?

• There are 2 pages of blueprints.
  
  • The first page has blueprints for common items that you’ll need to craft in order to fix and/or install stuff. Most of these things can be bought in space station trade terminals but if you learn the blueprint, you can craft it yourself. Here is also where you unlock Atlas Passes. (Please note: As of the latest patch (Origins) there is a bug with the Oxygen Capsule. If you purchase this blueprint, you probably will lose your ‘Factory Override Unit’ and not get the blueprint, and it will still show up as needing to be purchased).
  • The second page has blueprints for valuable items that you can craft and then sell for a lot of units. The most valuable items are the Stasis Device and the Fusion Igniter.

How to efficiently find Manufacturing Facilities?

• The easiest way is to purchase a bunch of Planetary Chart (secure site) from a space station. This can take you to either a Supply Depot, a Manufacturing Facility or an Operations Centre. You’ll need to go to each site to clear it before you can use another map.

How do I solve the puzzle?

• You will have to solve a ‘puzzle’ correctly to be eligible for a reward. Not all puzzles reward blueprints/etc.
  
• You can drop a save beacon outside the front and save before going in, reloading if you choose the incorrect answer.
  
• If you learn enough of the language, you can start solving the puzzles on your own using clues from the terminal.
  
• You can reference this article from the wiki and ctrl+f the prompt to find the correct answer as well as eligible rewards (if any).
  

Upgrades

What do I do with all these extra C, B and A-class modules?

• You can sell them back to a technology merchant for some nanites.
  
• Alternatively, if you're trying to upgrade the stats on an S-class upgrade, you can save your game and then install an S-class upgrade. If the stats look bad, reset from your last save and use another module of the same type (but can be any class). Then immediately destroy it. Then, install the new upgrade and see if your stats are any better.
  

Expanding storage

How can I expand my Exosuit storage?

• For every new system you visit, you will be eligible to upgrade your Exosuit by one slot. One will be available next to the Exosuit Technology Merchant, and one will be available by summoning the Anomaly in that system and going to the terminal beside the Exosuit Blueprints person. Upgrades start cheap but they go up in price capping at 1 million units each.
  
• Alternatively, you will need Drop Pod Coordinate Data.
  

How can I find/use Drop Pod Coordinate Data?

• The easiest way I've found is to use a Planetary Chart (inhabited outpost) until you get a Colossal Archive (also known as a Planetary Archive). This is a high-rank trade post. Search the Galactic Trade Terminal for Drop-Pod Coordinate Data and buy as many as you can afford. This is the easiest way, imo.
  
• You use Drop Pod Coordinate Data in your Signal Booster to find a nearby Drop Pod. Make sure before you go that you have at least: Ionized Cobalt x55, Antimatter x1, Sodium Nitrate x45, Oxygen x40.
  

How can I find/use Multi-tool Expansion Slots?

• They are offered as a reward for some puzzles in a Manufacturing Facility.
  
• Alternatively, frigates can bring them back from missions.
  

How can I find/use Storage Augmentation Units?

• There are two main ways to obtain them:
  • Running frigate fleet missions will occasionally reward one.
  • Scrapping an existing Starship will occasionally reward one.
• Once you have one, you can upgrade your Starship by one slot at a terminal found in any Space Station or the Anomaly.

Repeatable Missions

What should I be not missing out on, on a daily/weekly basis?

• Every day, a new Quicksilver quest is available in the Nexus. You can skip up to 2 days of missions and when you go on the third day, you can pick up 3 quests (not all at once, but in a row).
  
• Every time you complete a new milestone (or several), make sure to go to the Anomaly and talk to Iteration Ares for some nanites as a reward.
  
• Every so often, visit the Anomaly and talk to Iteration Helios to receive nanites in exchange for Flora/Fauna data.
  
• Once a week, you can visit Iteration Helios to receive a free Broadcast Receiver which will locate a Derelict Freighter for you.
  

Portals

• You can easily find a portal by using the Exocraft scanner to scan for a Monolith.
  
• In the early game if you stumble upon a portal, you probably don't know a lot of glyphs. What I did was just enter a bunch of the same glyphs in a random order and went to a random planet.
  
• Once you learn your glyphs you can visit /NMSCoordinateExchange to visit cool places.
  

Network

• Browse your Options > Network area and make sure you're comfortable with the current settings to avoid getting griefed by other players.

Troubleshooting & Quick Bug-Fixes

I can't expand my base!

• If you find that you cannot expand your base further, save your game and reload your save.

I'm stuck accessing my storage unit and I can't move.

• Open the base-building menu and then toggle build camera (X and then C on PC) to get out without having to restart your game/lose your save.

Stuff keeps disappearing from my refiner and harvesters!

• If you don't regularly play with others and you want to not lose all of the stuff in your refiners/harvesters, then just go into Options > Network and set Multiplayer to Disabled. You can still do the Quicksilver quests at the Nexus, too!

I'm trying to hatch a Void Egg and the coordinates take me to... nothing

• I'm not sure if this qualifies as a bug, but... you must complete the Void Egg quests in the Euclid Galaxy. If you haven't changed Galaxies, it's not an issue, but I wanted to be in Eissentam and it takes me up to finding a planet and giving me coordinates... and then nothing is there. I went back to Euclid and I was able to find it easily.

Alternative title: Why Your Complaints Aren't Reasonable for AE
Alright folks, let’s get into it.
First off, I would like to say that I have spent money on AE, but not much compared to how much I have played it and for how long. About what I would have spent on a normal video game, time vs. money wise. I have also been playing since the first release, not right as it released, but before any patches were applied. I have seen units go from OP to weak to OP.
Before we get into the weeds and the logic, let’s first work on a few assumptions, or perhaps a better way to phrase it would be the givens. The ideas that we aren’t going to prove because they shouldn’t need it.
1 - Any game, app, etc needs to make money. If they don’t they stop working on many levels.
2 - High quality games need to make more money at a baseline to pay the creators - artists, writers, coders, public relations, IT help, composers etc.
Let’s also work out some givens specific to AE as a gacha game. Stuff that if you don’t want it, why are you playing AE instead of another game? Any goal of making AE better is not about changing the core of how it works. Ex: Make AE have PvP is directly against a given because no PvP is a core part of what makes AE, AE.
1 - Time gated content is bad.
2 - PvP is bad (in Gacha games).
3 - Money grabs and predatory purchasing engines are bad. (If you aren’t sure what these are, some good examples would be Secret Lair in MTG and the Kreela Fragment Tournament Debacle in RAID. If you’d like more information, please feel free to ask).
4 - AE as a game is better when it keeps getting content. While what is there already is great, one of the great parts of AE is that it keeps getting more and more storylines, gear, characters etc.
Now, on to talking about what makes a mobile game/app work and continue to work. There are a few different ways that an app can fund itself to pay its creators, investors etc. Some apps use a bunch of these tools, some apps use them all, some only use one or two.
1 - Ads: The first type of ads are to access and play the game. These ads are generally considered frustrating and problematic because you can’t avoid them. They are going to take your time periodically rather than perhaps all at once. There is also a small subset of these that are pinpoint and pervasive, rather than all or nothing (such as small ads in corners etc). The second type of ads are ones that enhance your play or can be used instead of premium currency in certain situations. Depending on what it’s for and the extent you reasonably use it, these can be reasonable or frustrating (AE just recently moved into the second category).
2 - Energy systems: The first type of energy system includes any games where once your energy is spent, there is nothing to actually do. These systems can vary, but essentially in order to continue playing one must wait or pay money. The second type is a subset of what you can do in the game. You can still explore, level, get items, grind various goals, and advance the storyline without the energy mechanic, but it still exists in the game in some form limiting what you are able to do and can be adjusted with currency of some kind (AE is the second category here as well).
3 - Gacha/Character Purchase - Through some combination of currency units are locked behind being randomly found through some mechanic that either needs time to be acquired or money. Stronger units are more rare. (AE is in this category as its main source of income, it also lets you buy characters directly at times). There are different flavors of gacha games, but they are harder to quantify. EX: Some gacha games can’t be finished with free units while others can. Some have PvP which can’t be brought to the highest level without certain units, so the need to get them is higher.
4 - Price to play: This is where the game itself costs money to download and play. Many times, if this cost is higher, it is the only thing one needs to buy. As an upfront cost, it can be cheap for the player in the long run, but also runs the risk of not being fun and being a waste of money.
5 - DLC: This is a big money maker for big name games where instead of releasing a sequel and splitting player bases, making new worlds, etc., a company will release more content for the same game that costs extra.
6 - Information: This is where a game/app will get your information, either through what they ask for, what they need to run, or even what you use it for, and sell that information to other companies.
7 - Donations: Some games and apps work on donations. They don’t officially get money through many other venues, but rather rely on their users' generosity, and understanding that if they want to keep using the platform/app etc. they need to make sure there is money flowing in. This can include various crowdfunding options. It is mostly for bigger names that can guarantee that they are essentially too big to fail (ex Wikipedia).
8 - Premium Subscriptions: Some of these subs remove negative aspects (such as certain energy issues or ads), while some give a continuous benefit (such as currency, exp), while others ungate content (past level x, opens certain areas). Generally speaking the first is usually considered reasonable, the second fine, and the third just a scummy version of Price to Play.
9 - Sponsorships: These are where aspects of the game are changed in some way to show sponsors. This has a lot of overlap with ads but is usually less exhaustive because they are pinpoint decisions rather than general advertising. Some of these can also be outside of the game and therefore less problematic than ads. Sponsorships generally also need big names, where companies are willing to make a bigger bet on something.
10 - Cosmetics - Buying cosmetics for your favorite units is something that many companies do to bring in extra money but at no gameplay cost.
This list isn’t 100%, but I think it’s pretty good around ways that you can monetize a game or an app. First things first, let’s break down what the options are for AE given our givens. Not just what they could do, but what would be effective or not and why.
Ads - We have seen these added. And they’ve been added the right way, as an option and not something you NEED to do. You get premium currency for watching them. Now, some people have said you basically need to because they give you so much. And while strictly speaking, if you want to maximize, obviously you need to, but unlike other games you don’t need to maximize. Why? Because of one of the most amazing core aspects of AE that sets it apart from so many other games. No PvP. No tournaments. No leaderboards. Nothing time gated. There is no need to get every last chrono stone because you don’t need them in any kind of timeline.
Energy - Our version of energy, the red and green cards, do gate some content. And you can buy them at a low cost to keep grinding specific dungeons. Few people do this however because 1 - The dungeons, while useful, aren’t very necessary for progression generally, except at the start of the game when you lack 5 stars. Which means there’s plenty more content to go through - which means you don’t generally waste time on dungeons spending money when you could be earning stones and chants from the chapters and side stories. And 2 - Tsubura Gems. If you really need to grind light, or scripts of some kind, you can generally do it with Gems, a free resource that doesn’t demand constant grinding I might add. If you don’t have many, you used them too greedily on something else, or it’s early game still and the reasons 1 isn’t a problem apply here too. These cards exist because if they didn’t there would be a much lower incentive for long time players to pull on upgrades like AS units or bringing 4.5 to 5 stars as endgame players would just spam the dungeons between new content. This would lead to them removing treatises from the pools, reducing their chance to drop, or making other hoops to jump through which none of us want to keep pulling at the same level to keep up revenue.
Gacha/Purchase - Obviously AE goes with this. This is the main source of income. And in my opinion this is another huge strength. Yes, the rates aren’t the highest. Yes, stones aren’t falling from the sky. But the game is completable with free characters. And with just a few good pulls, it’s not even nightmarish to do so like other games. Some of the free characters aren’t just usable, they’re high tier. Deirdre, AS Gariyu, Mana, Azami, and Cerrine are all near the top, between 90-100. They aren’t even that much of a grind. The worst is Levia with fishing and she is like 80. There aren’t glaring holes with the free units either. All kinds of elements, AoE, Single Target, Debuffs, healing.
Price to play wouldn’t have worked because while it involves big names, it isn’t itself a big name. Maybe if there was a sequel or something.
DLC would be awful. Having new stories unlock more items and stones is amazing for F2P players and veterans alike. It also doesn’t make much sense to add cost DLC to a free to play game.
Information doesn’t really make sense with a game like this. They don’t need our info and don’t collect it.
Donations and Sponsorships really don’t make sense for the same reason that a price to play doesn’t make sense. The game has no brand recognition.
Premium Subscriptions are an interesting idea. The problem lies in it not making much sense for consumers or the devs depending on the model. The ads aren’t mandatory so it doesn’t make sense to remove them. XP is grindable infinitely, and is done very quickly in the XP dungeon, so anyone willing to pay money would just level units there. Gold isn’t much of a gateway, but the gold dungeon exists so the same reason apply. Content has the same problem as DLC. So the only thing could be some lower level generic XP boost and maybe continuous stones, but why not just buy stones at that point?
Cosmetics are a possibility, but the problem with cosmetics is that they are primarily for multiplayer games where you can show off. AE is single player, no PvP, no interaction with other people. So the only way you’d be able to show off cosmetics would be showing your phone to someone else or taking screenshots, which just doesn’t really do it. Without a real reason to get them, there’s not much incentive to make something like this and expect it to make any money.
So now that we’ve looked at our options, now let’s break down some of the things people complain about:
More stones?!?!?!!!!! I hear, you, only getting a pull every month from baseline stones is a bummer. But why aren’t you completing content? Finishing achievements? Moving through the game? And if you’ve already done it, why do you need so many more pulls? If there’s nothing left to do, you shouldn’t need new characters. And at that point you’ve clearly played this game for an insane amount of time. You’ve gotten so much from it already. Making a perfectly continuous and infinite game simply isn’t possible. At that point, which most of the people complaining aren’t even close to, you have already gotten your money’s worth. Even if that isn’t a factor, you just don’t need the same number of pulls as other games because of how powerful the free characters are. And honestly, with so much content, so many powerful free characters, if there wasn’t some incentive to get stones for pulls, nobody would. What people need to remember is that there needs to be balance. If stones were far more plentiful, the free characters would need to be weaker. The reason for this is there needing to be a need to pull stones. If you get a ton for free, and the free characters are amazing, and you get free resources like the gems to get chants and treatise etc., then the average player has no reason to spend money. And whales don’t need to whale. Then the game has no revenue and can’t continue making content. Unlike games like League of Legends which primarily work off of cosmetics, there’s very little incentive for that kind of monetization as I explained above. Between low stones, needing luck, or the game stopping content, I’d take low stones every single time.
Powercreep, waaahhhhhh!!! This one drives me insane. AE explicitly deals with powercreep, and SO WELL. They literally take outdated units and make them viable again with NEW UNIQUE GEAR. Manifests are AMAZING. They even give updates to free units! Azami manifest, AS Gariyu, Deirdre?!?! I’ve never seen a game handle powercreep this well. Some of the best chase units are units that were 100% OP at the start of the game and then SUCKED x amount of time into the game. The ebb and flow of power in units is wonderfully handled. Not to mention that power creep actually helps the game get new players. When the newer units are powerful, it makes new players feel like they aren’t slogging through content to get to the new stuff.
Why isn’t there a pity system?!?! Know what the pity system is? Selectors. You get to choose your unit. Congrats. For some, this is the biggest upside to AE. The minnows and dolphins rejoice! With just a little bit of money spent on the game, you can get that unit you absolutely want!!!
I can’t believe we have to deal with ads!!!! You don’t. Kinda end of story? Ads are optionally for the reasons I mentioned earlier. You don’t need to watch them. If they bug you that much, literally just don’t do it. But the people complaining are gonna do it anyway because they value the stones more than not watching the ads. Which is the whole point! Make a trade for people that want to F2P but want more resources without invalidating their economic model. Win Win.
TL;DR - People complain about there not being enough stuff, but the other options suck for AE. More stones from nothing simply isn’t sustainable. The ads do well to bridge the gap for F2P players. No PvP or player and player interaction alongside the powerful free units creates a unique and wonderful mobile game.

It's been hours since I was shoved inside this room, and I don't know what to do. I've been staring at this phone, but my mind is blank. I can't fucking think straight, like everything I try and write looks wrong. My hands feel weird and they're shaking, so if this is a incoherent mess, I'm sorry. Maybe it's from the drugs, or that bastard is finally pushing his way inside my mind. Right now, I'm not going to think about him. I'm not going to think about my inevitable fate as a test subject for James, or my friends and castmates who have been taken and turned into empty shells for fictional characters.
No. No, I'm not going to fucking think about that.
Because if I think about this thing in my head? The razor blade in my eye? I'll start to lose it, and you guys don't need that. You want an update, and I'm going to give you one. Just bear with me because my head is fucking killing me. I've been sitting in the same position for hours, my head between my knees. I feel woozy. Like the time [REDACTED] dared me to mix vodka and tequila. But that was being drunk. Tipsy. Like I was flying. This feels like I'm fading. I keep telling myself I'm okay, that the program inside me is broken. At least that's what James said. That's why I'm here.
But I can still feel him.
Fuck, he's in my head, and I can't get him out. He's like a parasite, leeching inside my brain. Jesus, I can't think like that. I have to keep a clear head.

So, I guess I'll start from the present, and then I'll take you back to the beginning, telling you my side of what's been going on. Hopefully, this will help you get a better idea of who we are, and you can help us reach out to someone out there who can get us out of here. Because [REDACTED] doesn't have much time. None of us do.
First, it's probably obvious by now, but I'm not my castmate [REDACTED].
I found her phone in here. It was under the bed. There's a crack down the screen, so I can bet James thought he destroyed it before taking her. I can barely see what I'm typing since the screen is messed up, but I found you. Our connection to the outside, what [REDACTED] has been using to talk to you guys. You helped her when I was too doped up to even realise what was going on, and for that I'm thankful. Thank you for taking a chance on her story, and believing it so far.
All I can do is look at the posts, weekly accounts [REDACTED] has published. Though I've only been able to read small bits and pieces of what she's told you guys. The posts are blocked. I don't know if it's the WIFI network here, or the app itself, but I can't read the full parts. From what I've managed to put together, my castmate has been going by a different name, which makes sense. So I'm going to continue calling her the name you guys are familiar with. Robin Harley. As well as the cover names she came up with for us as a cast, as well as the characters we play.
Though it's not like she or I have a choice, really. Our names, as well as anything to do with the network or show are blanked out every time I try typing them, like our real identities no longer exist and some unseen force is blocking me every time I try.
It's driving me nuts.
Anyway. My name is [REDACTED]. But from Robin, you know me as Rory Gallagher. I'm twenty years old, and I play Mac Price in [REDACTED]. Also, the worst mistake I ever made. Signing up for Mac was what I thought was a dream come true. I didn't even want to be an actor. The only acting role I had before Mac was a shepherd in my year 3' Christmas play. I didn't even say anything.
My mum was the one who pushed me to audition for Mac, and I actually got it. I barely made an effort, because I wanted to go to music school. I turned up to the audition in my school uniform and my guitar. My mate Connor said not to make a good impression, so I didn't brush my hair or wear smart clothes. I flunked my lines and was intentionally nonchalant to the directors.
Though it turns out I was the "perfect" fit, because apparently British guys in their late teens with messy bedhead was TV appropriate, despite having a strong northern accent and mumbling the lines they gave me. I wasn't expecting them to give me a second glance, never mind fly me to LA to be in an actual TV show. At first, it was like being thrown in the deep end of a swimming pool.
I was an outcast among the other cast members. They could barely understand my accent, and I was too anxious to talk to any of them. But then Noah started hosting these Mario Kart get-together's for the main cast, and that's when I got to know them.
They didn't just become my friends, I saw them as my family. I realized that despite being a whole world away from my parents, I could make my own family in the US. And that's what I did.
Except now I know the truth behind the network and James, and their plans for us. In reality I'm not even an actor anymore. I'm a fucking test subject. A prototype James can't wait to get his claws into once more. I survived stage four. Well, my mind did. Whatever Robin did to me when I was under, it saved me. Because of her I'm myself right now. I have my own thoughts, and I'm going to use this freedom to continue our story. I won't let Robin's work die with her.
God, I don't even know if they're still alive. I don't know anything.
I don't have much time, and I'm guessing you guys already know most of what's been going on, so I'm just going to tell you what I know. I guess I'll start from the beginning.
Sorry, I think I'm repeating myself, but in all honesty I feel like I'm going crazy.
I've been locked in this room for hours. It almost reminds me of Robin's character's bedroom. We shoot a lot of scenes in there so I know it well. This room is so... purple. The bed is covered in a purple fluffy blanket, and the carpet is blended shades of the same damn colour. It's daylight outside, but I have no idea what time it is. The sky is grey, and it's been raining most of the day. I like the rain. It relaxes me. I've tried to sleep with my head in my lap, but the slightest noises wake me up. I keep thinking James, or that crackhead doctor, is going to come back and drag me downstairs.
The clock on this phone is stuck at 12:00. I don't know where I am; some kind of facility, maybe. The phone was already connected to WIFI when I found it, so it looks like Robin was able to send you an update before they took her. I wish I could read it, but the post itself is blocked. All I can see is: "I'm a cast member in your favourite TV show, and I'm becoming my character." but I can't read the whole thing, only the first few lines where she explains she can't write to you anymore.
It hurts just reading that. I can't imagine what the rest says. Sorry, I'm trying to keep a clear head. It's hard, though. Robin is better at this than me. She can weave stories out of nothing, and make anything sound interesting. I got an E in English GCSE, and I suck at writing in general.
I'm dyslexic, so I might make mistakes, or get my words mixed up. I'm used to writing song lyrics, so this can't be that hard. Hopefully I can be as coherent as Robin.
Like I said, I'm going to tell you everything I know, starting from the beginning.
The night we planned to escape, I remember standing outside with Noah sharing a cigarette. The air was bitter, and I was shivering. The temperature drops like crazy in [REDACTED] and I didn't have a coat. The two of us were leaning against the wall. Noah was quiet.
We were both nervous about the plan, and he over-thinks everything. I've known him for nearly four years, and I can just about read the expression which is his "over-thinking" face. We were quite a match, for two guys on the opposite sides of the spectrum. I loved playing music and rugby, and Noah was a photographer in his spare time. But we fit. I don't know if it was our joint sense of humour, or the chemistry our characters had being best friends. Noah was like the brother I've always wanted.
I basked in silence for a while, watching smoke mix with my breath in front of me, when words started popping out of my mouth. I was on edge. We weren't allowed to talk on set, so I was itching to talk to him about the plan. But when I glanced at him, it seemed like Noah was caught up in his thoughts. Not just about the plan. It was something else.
Something he wasn't telling me.
"Are you alright?" I shot him a smile, elbowing him. It was my way of getting his attention, and usually he'd grin back, nodding. But that time he didn't move, didn't even blink.
"Sure." Noah finally responded through a scoff, puffing out swirling smoke. He gave me the side-eye, one brow raised. "As okay as I'll ever be, a prisoner of my job."
His words sent shivers down my spine, but I laughed it off.
I didn't want to admit it, even if he was right.
After a moment, Noah finally turned to me. He took a drag of the cig, and the end lit up in the dark. I was staring at burning orange embers, transfixed by the light, when he fixed me with a look.
"Rory." his tone was suddenly serious, and I snapped out of it.
"Hmm?"
He passed me the crumbling end of the cigarette.
"Do you remember Avery?"
The name didn't ring a bell, and when I frowned, Noah shook his head with a short laugh, but I could tell my reaction had hit him hard, enough to drag the air from his lungs. But Noah was one to hide his emotions, burying them deep in the back of his mind. "Never mind." He shrugged, before backing away, shooting me a two-fingered salute. "I should get back to set before they send out a search party." his lips quirked into a smile, and the sickly feeling in my gut dispersed. If Noah was smiling and confident, then so was I. "Tonight, yeah?" were his parting words. "Still know the plan?"
I snorted. "Course I do! I have the damn thing memorised!"
A few hours later, we were done shooting for the night. Robin was doing some reshoots with the crew, and Lana and Izzie were being interviewed by Variety. I was heading to craft services to grab a bite. I was starving and had barely eaten anything all day. The crew were strict about what we ate. I had shirtless scenes contracted, so I had to keep up a good figure. Which meant I was barely allowed breakfast, and had to go on what's called a "dehydration diet" to make sure my body was sculpted to perfection.
That night, I was practically drunk on the idea of getting out of there. I grabbed a plate of treats and ate as much as possible before James noticed. He was already being a dick to Izzie about her weight, and I was so close to hitting the bastard. My castmate had been in tears most of the week, because they were forcing her to wear a tiny skirt. Noah and Robin were the only ones stopping me from popping James' nose. Mentally and physically exhausted from the shoot, I was relieved to be done.
I just wanted to get to Robin's parents as soon as possible. There, we would be free from the cruelty of the network, and thanks to Noah, we could expose the show through his mysterious friend. I knew as soon as I got hold of a phone, I'd be ringing mum and dad, and telling them everything. It's been so long since I've heard their voices, and back then I actually thought I was going to talk to them. I was homesick. Even when I had my American friends, I still missed my hometown. Sheffield.
The city in Northern England I'd grown up in.
It's where my name stays alive in my families memories, even if it's been cruelly snatched away here. It sounds crazy, but my real name almost feels foreign to me now.
Even my accent, my mother tongue, the broad Yorkshire drawl I didn't think I'd ever lose, feels wrong. I know it shouldn't, but Mac's American twang feels natural now.
When I was heading to my trailer to grab my bag and jacket, Noah bumped into me. At first I thought he was joking around, but in the dim light of the floodlights illuminating the outdoor set in sicky white light, I glimpsed his wide green eyes and twisted lips. He reached out and grabbed my arm.
I stumbled over, but he held my weight, pulling me away from set.
"Keep walking." He hissed out. "Keep walking, and don't say a word."
"What?!" I choked out. Noah was freaking me out, and I was too tired to argue with him. The crew mostly ignored us, but Noah was acting like a sniper was following us.
He didn't stop until we were inside the studio. We passed the sets for Katie and Will's bedrooms and the school gymnasium, and finally Noah was turning to me. His face was pale.
He was shaking. That's when I knew something was wrong. Because Noah wasn't one to break down. He was the one with a plan, the one who always knew what to do. The rest of us saw him as a sort of leader, especially when we became prisoners of our own jobs. Looking at him then, I realized how helpless he was. His eyes were wide, parted lips trembling.
Seeing Noah like that terrified me.
Before I could question him, he was grabbing my shoulders. His grip was harsh, fingernails digging through my shirt. "Where are the others?"
"Huh?" Swallowing bile crawling up the back of my throat, I shook my head, pulling away from him.
"On set, I think? Lana and Izzie are doing that interview with Variety, and Robin is doing Katie reshoots." Looking at Noah, a million emotions seemed to pass in front of his eyes. He was breathing heavily, his grip unrelenting. "Why?"
Noah didn't reply, and I forced myself to stay calm. "What is it? What's going on?"
I was too afraid to ask if somehow our plan had been compromised.
"Did they find out?" Breathless, I was struggling to speak, and Noah's expression wasn't helping. He almost looked catatonic. "Do they know about our plan to leg it?"
"No," Shaking his head, Noah was trembling. "No, I saw something."
Staring back at him, I frowned. "Saw something?"
My castmate seemed to catch a hold of himself. He exhaled sharply.
"Look, Derek wanted to meet me to talk, and his office was locked. So I broke in-"
Derek and Noah had arranged to talk?
What did Derek's brother, and the co-writer of the show want to talk to my castmate about?
That was the question on my lips, but all I could choke out was, "You broke into a writers office?!"
He rolled his eyes, seemingly coming back to life.
"Yes, shut up. Anyway, his office was trashed. And I mean trashed. His desk was upturned, every shelf ransacked," Noah paused, and he grabbed for my arm again. "I...I saw something I shouldn't have."
Holding his gaze, I struggled to read his expression. "Saw something? What did you see?"
Finally, he let go of me. "I don't... I don't know! We need to get out of here. Like right now, okay?"
Twisting away from me, Noah cursed under his breath, running his hands through his hair.
"Is Robin still on set? How long will the Variety interview take?"
I followed his frenzied pace. "Are you going to tell me what you saw?"
Noah opened his mouth to reply, when a familiar voice sliced through the silence between us.
"Hey boys, where's the fire?"
James was standing behind us, two guards by his side. Our producer was smiling, but there was a gleam in his eyes I didn't like. "You two don't look so good."
Noah was stiff next to me. I expected him to start yelling, but he looked startlingly calm.
"We're going to head home." He said, though I could sense a tremor in my castmate's tone.
"We're all done for today, James."
The man shook his head. "No, I'm afraid we've made alternative arrangements for you five tonight." His lips quirked into a smile. "That won't be a problem, right boys?"
"I said," Noah's tone was splintering ice. His gaze was hard, unwavering on James. But I could tell he was scared. "We're pretty beat, so we're going to head home."
Cocking his head, the writer shot me a smirk. Chills slithered down my spine. "I'm sorry, is Rory unable to speak for himself?" His voice was teasing, and I realised he was playing with us. James had been a dick since taking away our phones, but this was different. This time he looked at me like I was an object, a slab of meat. "Of course he's the youngest, but I'm sure he can open his own mouth."
Noah didn't back down. He took a slow step towards the writer.
"Listen asshole, we're done, okay? We're done playing mind games. We quit. So let us walk out of those doors with Robin, Lana and Izzie, or I'll start talking real loud about Avery and Daffodil."
Noah's words confused me.
Daffodil.
Avery. I recognised the name, but it was vague, a barely reachable memory.
James' gaze flicked to Noah, his lips pursing. "I'm sorry, what was that?"
"You heard me." Noah gritted out. "Or do you want me to say it louder?"
Something seemed to shift in the writer's expression. His eyes darkened.
"Change of plan." he spoke calmly. "I think I need to talk to Noah in private." James gestured to me, and I was hit with a sudden wave of fight or flight. But I couldn't move.
"Please escort Mr Gallagher outside. There's a car waiting. Then take the girls. I'll handle Miss Harley after I've dealt with my favourite star."
Before I could try and protest, one of the men lunged forwards and grabbed me, pulling me into his arms, his beefy embrace holding me hostage. The other guard seized Noah, forcing his arms behind his back. But my castmate didn't struggle. He was frozen. His eyes were wide, unseeing. When I tried to throw myself from my guard's grip, he tightened his embrace. The writer's smile didn't waver. He looked my castmate up and down, his greedy eyes taking all of Noah in. "Mr Keaton, I think it's time to talk about your attitude and behaviour on set. After all, you must set an example for your cast mates."
"You're sick." Noah's voice was barely a breath. "I saw what you did."
My heart was hammering, questions buzzing around my brain.
What did Noah see? What the hell was Daffodil, and who was Avery?
"Wonderful." James nodded, a sly smile curving on his lips. He didn't seem fazed by my castmate's accusations. "Then you can tell me all about it in my office."
"No." Noah seemed to come to life, his eyes filling with tears. He struggled violently in the guards arms. "No, no, no, you can't do this! I won't let you do this!"
My castmate was hysterical. "Rory!" He was dragged, kicking and yelling, dragging his feet. I was paralysed. I'd never seen Noah like that. He had always been so calm and collected, barely showing his emotions. But right then, he reminded me of a child. The fear was palpable in his eyes, tears streaming down his face. His gaze met mine, and my stomach catapulted.
"Rory, you need to get help! Do you hear me? You need to find-"
His cry was cut off when the guard slapped a hand over his mouth, muffling the rest of his words so they were an incomprehensible muffled cry trapped behind the guards sweaty palm.
I know that my castmate's name was in my throat, but I couldn't say it. I couldn't scream. All I could do was watch Noah get dragged away. When I tried to lunge out of my guards grip, he bellowed out a laugh, wrapping his arms tighter around me.
It was suffocating.
"Ohhh no you don't!" He chortled.
I was hauled off of set, and not one person seemed to care. The crew barely threw me a glance, and secondary cast members turned a blind eye. I spotted Robin's familiar ponytail in the distance, but when I twisted around to shout, the guard's meaty hand slammed over my mouth, cutting off my cry.
Before I knew what was happening, I was being shoved into the back of a fancy car with tinted black windows. The seats were rich leather. But I wasn't planning on staying in there.
As soon as I was dumped in the back seat, I threw myself at the door, tackling the handle. But it was locked. Of course the door was fucking locked.
"Nice try, kid." The guard had plopped himself in the front seat. He threw something at me, and when I caught it, I realized it was a can of Sprite.
"Drink it." He said. "You're looking peaky, Gallagher."
When I shook my head, the guard twisted to face me. "Orders are to force it down your throat if you don't do it yourself." he quirked a brow. "You're a big boy, I'm sure you don't need my help."
The last thing I wanted was to be force-fed Sprite. I cracked open the can quickly, taking a gulp. It was lukewarm and twisted my gut. The guard made an appreciative noise and started the car.
I shouldn't have drank the Sprite. Of course they drugged me.
The journey was foggy. No, everything was foggy. I remember falling in and out of feverish sleep, pressed against the window. My eyes were heavy and my lips felt weird and bloated. I watched headlights flash by in jarring movements when I was startled to almost awareness, but fell back under.
I remember the car door opening, and the cool air grazing my flushed cheeks. The half empty can of Sprite slipped off my lap, but I was floating. No... someone was carrying me. Gravel crunched under my guards feet, and all I could do was watch it turn into sickly yellow carpet. There were voices that sounded like they were underwater. Then... stairs. I was swinging back and forth on the guards back, before a door was opening and I was being dropped onto something soft. Something cool.
A bed.
The door slammed shut, and I was left to stare at the ceiling, while the world spun around me. My lips were numb. Noah. All I could think about was Noah.
He told me to find someone. Who did he tell me to find?
I don't know how long I lay there, waiting for my head to stop spinning. When the door finally flew open, my mind was blank. I sat up, ready to make a run for it. But then a blur of blonde was stumbling into the room, and I had to choke back a sob. Robin. Her expression was twisted with fright, blue eyes frantically scanning the room. By then, I had forgotten about Noah's words. I'd forgotten about Noah all together. When she asked where the others were, I shook my head, spluttering that I had no idea.
After that night, everything just goes... blurry.
I don't know what the fuck happened to me. Though there are flashes. I know I was taking some kind of pill. There were splinters of awareness when I managed to recapture my mind and thoughts, but it was short-lived. Because I always fell back. Every day felt like I was drowning. Like I couldn't breathe.
It's funny. It almost felt like I was living one of those old fashioned VCR'S.
Days passed. I don't know how many. I lived vicariously through flashes. Mainly of Robin. Her eyes were pained, haunted. She was shaking me, but I couldn't respond.
I couldn't move.
Then... awareness. Everything came flooding back when something hard hit the back of my head. It was like sucking in oxygen. Something had become undone. Whatever had been done to me began to unravel, and I was able to stay myself. I was able to keep behind the façade, crushing the pill beneath my foot. Mac was still there, the program they had put inside me was still skating the back of my mind, but I was the one in control.
I'm sure Robin already told you in her posts, but I lost it on set.
I couldn't deal with hiding away anymore. Noah was just standing there, his eyes blank. Lana and Izzie looked right through me. Robin. Part of me knew she was awake, but she still stared at me like I was a stranger. Vacant. There was nothing there. My friends were puppets on strings for James to play with. I tried to attack James, but before I could get near him, an icy point was slicing into my neck.
Everything went dark and I found myself drifting.
There were voices bleeding through the dark. I heard them.
Though I quickly started to realize my body...it was shaking. Convulsing.
I could taste rusty change at the back of my throat. Like the time I'd swallowed a penny when I was a kid.
More voices, while my body seemed to react to them, shaking more violently.
Something was spilling from my mouth, and I was choking on it.
Blood. It hit me that I was choking on blood. There was an accute pain at the back of my head, the type of pain that would normally make me scream. But I couldn't scream. I couldn't cry out for the others. My mouth was full of blood, and I was choking.
There was a piercing beeping noise screeching in my ears, and it wouldn't shut up.
"We're losing him!" someone shrieked. I could feel multiple hands on my chest, pressing down. I was struggling to breathe. Something was pressed against my mouth and nose. Something plastic. I wanted to rip it away, but my wrists were pinned down.
"No, he's going to be fine." James's voice brought me back to half awareness, and I gagged on the blood filling my mouth. My body jolted, but I could feel his hand on my clammy head, his fingers carding through my hair. The writer was speaking to someone. He sounded panicked.
"If we lose Mac Price's body, I'll make sure your family get the same fucking treatment."
His voice was trembling. He tightened his grip on my hair, ragging my head like a doll. "Do you hear me?" James spat. "Clean him up and repeat stage four!"
"We can't." Another voice squeaked. A male nurse.
"Why not?" James demanded. "It worked with the other three!"
"Mr Marley, please understand Rory has haemorrhaged twice due to a brain bleed. We do not need any more strain on his brain right now. If we go through with stage four, I am telling you he will not survive the procedure, and you will lose him."
"His mind?" James said, after a moment. "I told you I don't care about the boy's consciousness. After the extraction it will be dumped with the others."
His words hurt, but I couldn't speak. I could barely breathe.
"No." The nurse spoke sternly. "I'm talking about his body. It will die, Marley. If we proceed with this procedure, Mr Gallagher's body will shut down and no longer be of use to you. Unless you plan on inserting the program into a corpse?"
There was a short pause before, "Fine." James let out a sharp hiss. "Get him out of my sight."
More darkness.
I remember being asleep for the longest time. It was peaceful. Hell, I thought I was dead. Because the voices stopped. I could no longer feel my body, and the pain in the back of my head was gone. It was bliss, after what I went through. I wanted to stay in the dark. I didn't care about waking up, because part of me already knew my fate. I just wanted to go home. I wanted my mum and dad.
I wanted Noah to tell me shit was going to be okay, and Robin to tease me for being dramatic. I wanted Izzie to wrap me in a hug, and Lana to start cracking crude jokes.
I wanted them.
Sorry, this isn't much of an account, since I was out of it for most of the time.
But I'm trying to give you guys everything.
Anyway, there was a point when I finally woke up. But it was weird. It was like my brain was awake, but my body was still under James's control, like I was trapped behind a glass wall. I could look through, but I couldn't move. Life came back to me in the form of applause. It hurt my head.
That's the first thought that hit me. The applause was so loud, slamming into my ears. Opening my eyes, I was greeted to a large room which looked like a lecture hall. There were shadowed faces in the audience, shapes bleeding into my vision. People. It took me a disorienting moment to realise that the room was full of people. I panicked. Automatically, I tried to move, tried to cry out, but my mouth felt like it was full of cotton wool. After a moment, a bright spotlight seemed to dance across my peripheral, and it illuminated my surroundings enough so I could see.
I was standing on a stage. When I looked down, I found myself wearing a crisp white shirt, expensive material glued to my skin. Black pants and leather shoes. I must have been wearing over a thousand dollars. I don't know if it was the fact that I couldn't speak or move, but I began to hyperventilate.
There were people in front of me. Dozens of people. Looking to my left, I glimpsed another figure. Izzie. She was wearing a black strapless dress. Her hair was curled to perfection, chestnut skin glistening under the spotlight. To my right was Lana. Red dress. Strawberry blonde curls cascaded down her back. Both of them were staring forwards, their eyes empty, wide smiles stretched across their lips. It hit me like a wave of ice water. The three of us were being showcased.
We were on display, for everyone to see.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, my first three prototypes for Project Daffodil. The future of television!"
Noah's words seemed to ignite inside my mind.
Daffodil, I thought. Noah knew about it. Thinking back to his hysterical expression before he was taken away, everything made a sick kind of sense.
He tried to warn me. Tried to get us out of there. All of us.
James Marley's voice was thunderous. Through a microphone, it bounced around the room, echoing in the back of my head. The man appeared in front of me, dancing across the stage, a cheshire cat grin on his face. "Become in control of what is yours!"
More applause, before a voice from the audience.
I squinted, but I couldn't make out who it was. "Mr Marley, I believe you assured us five prototypes would be ready for today's presentation."
He was quick to reply. "Yes, I apologize for that. Katie and Will are still being worked on. Though I can guarantee they will be ready by the end of this week."
My legs felt like they were going to give-way.
Robin and Noah.
"I see. Please, continue."
No. I fought to scream, to do something. My body was working on its own accord. James' words sent shivers rattling down my spine.
Prototypes, was what he'd called us.
That's what we were?
"As I was saying before, by using our actors as accessible hosts, Project Daffodil has allowed us to use brand new technology granting us the ability to download each character's program directly into the host's brain."
"And the actors?" A woman spoke up. "What about them?"
Help. The word was on my lips, but I couldn't say it.
James chuckled.
"Mam, I came to the realisation that to make this project work, I would have to make sacrifices. Please be assured however, that our main cast volunteered for the project, and gave their consent. "
The audience murmured, satisfied.
James nodded along, smiling. "As for Miss Faraday, Miss Bright and Mr Gallagher, their consciousness has been removed entirely, leaving only the program. However, rest assured their consciousness is in safe keeping, having been downloaded to our system. When we are done with shooting, we can very easily give them their minds back, and of course they can go on with their lives as normal."
Liar. Anger bubbled up inside of me. I was paralysed. It seemed so easy to open my mouth and yell that James was a liar, that everything he'd done was against our will.
Except I couldn't.
The woman's voice perked up. "So, you're saying, that standing in front of us are the characters?"
"Indeed." James said. "Standing in front of you are indeed our [REDACTED] characters. Folks, I give you Mac Price, Stella Hart, and Jules Lily!"
Gasps rang out, followed by more applause. I couldn't stand it. Part of me wanted to go back to sleep. It hurt even more seeing my body being paraded around like a puppet.
Everything hurt.
A figure stood. "I'm impressed Marley. If you can get the two other prototypes, I'll consider investing in your little project. If you say it's the future of television, then let's see."
James was practically jumping up and down.
He was a fucking lunatic.
"Thank you very much, Mr Dalton. They will be ready this Friday. And rest assured, these prototypes are patented to me, and any evidence of infringement will result in a serious lawsuit."
Laughter. Everyone was laughing, while my friends stood like soldiers awaiting orders.
Was that supposed to be funny?
After the presentation, I was let go again. It seemed like whatever was in my mind was letting me slip in and out of awareness, allowing me to see snippets of reality.
Though those snippets turned into flashes. Then actual instances when I was wide awake. I remember waking up, blood covering my pillow. I remember trying to wash it off, panicking, my own crimson hands trembling under the stream of hot water.
Life fully came back into focus when James slapped me across the face.
I was in his office. No idea how I got there. My mind was blurry, and something warm was dripping down my chin. Blood. But I knew it wasn't because of the slap. Something was wrong with me.
"Wake up."
His voice was scathing.
I didn't move, but from the look on his face, he was already onto me.
"I said... wake up!"
I jumped, automatically revealing myself.
The writer chuckled. "You're a lot of things, Mr Gallagher, but a good actor is not one of them. Your pretty face is what makes you Mac Price. Do you want to know why we picked you to be Mac?"
I glared back.
"This." he caressed my face, gripping my chin with the points of his nails, "is the only reason you made it. Don't think for one second that you're actually talented! Noah and Isabelle went to drama school, if I'm not mistaken. Lana has already been cast in several movies, as has Robin. You, however, only just got out of high school when we cast you. You're nothing but a kid with an attractive face."
“Go and fuck yourself.” I spat. It felt good to talk back to him. To use my mouth.
He rolled his eyes. "Such filthy language. Now look at me."
I was forced to do as I was told. I don't know if it was the pill, or the program, but my body and mind was compliant. "Stand still." James shone a light in my eye, and I couldn't help wincing.
"Oh." Marley hummed. "You're bleeding."
He tutted. "Rory, my dear boy, it seems like Mac is broken." he tipped his head to the side, in an almost sympathetic manner. "Whatever your castmate did to you may have saved your mind."
Cupping my cheeks, the writer's touch was almost fatherly. I pulled away with a snarl, and he chuckled, swiping a finger under my nose. It came back red, and I had to swallow a cry.
"And..." he hummed, pulling out a tissue and dabbing at my nose. "it appears the Mac program is causing you to haemorrhage at an alarming rate. But I'm sure we can fix you."
James turned to a guard. "Restrain him, we're going on a field trip."
The guard shook his head. "Sir, there are fans outside."
"Huh." Marley shrugged. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a face mask before slipping it over my mouth and nose. His fingers trailed over my ears when he fixed the straps. "Try anything, Rory, and I'll be paying your parents a visit." he quirked a brow. "And surely you don't want that."
I stayed quiet.
James dragged me outside, and there was a crowd of fans yelling my name. I put my head down quickly, letting the guards pull me towards an awaiting car. James cut a path through the fans.
"Rory!"
A girl's voice startled me. I was about to get in the car, and at the corner of my eye, James and the guards were chastising fans.
I turned to see a teenage girl, around sixteen or seventeen. Her blonde hair was in pigtails, red ribbons flitting in the breeze. She was cosplaying as one of the show's characters. Lana's character.
I waved weakly at her, but before I could force myself forwards, she was standing directly in front of me. At first I thought she was smiling, but then she pulled back her face mask. Her lips were parted in what looked like a cry. Her eyes were wide. It took me a moment to realize she looked terrified.
"Are you okay?" she hissed. "Do you need help?"
I didn't know what to say, so I choked out, "Glad you're enjoying the show!"
The girl didn't move. She leaned in close, her breath grazing my ear. "I saw Robin's posts," she hissed. "It's all true, isn't it? The fandom think it's a troll, but I know you're in trouble."
Posts, I thought dizzily.
What posts?
Before I could answer, the girl seemed to perk up, before sliding her mask back into place.
"High five!" she yelled, and something urged me to slap my hand against hers.
Something hit my hand. Paper.
A note.
I hid the note quickly, stuffing it in my jeans, and dived into the back of the car. The journey was long. We passed through the [REDACTED] border, though I'm not sure where I am. I know I'm in some kind of facility, but I was blindfolded on the way inside. All I remember are long white hallways. I was strapped down onto what looked like a dentist chair, and prodded and poked with needles.
"Well?" James was impatient.
“It seems the program is broken.” The doctor - an old-ish looking man, sighed.
“Marley, Mr Gallagher’s brain has had too much trauma. He's in pretty bad shape. So, I'll have to do a reinsertion. Though by miracle, the Mac program could come back to life itself."
I flinched when the old man dabbed my bloody nose. He was grinning, a whole mouth full of yellow teeth. "Oh, young man, what has Mr Marley done to you?"
It took every ounce of willpower I had not to spit in the asshole's face.
James was tight lipped. “Right. I’ll talk to the network. The initial presentation went fine, but for the second, I want an empty shell with the program installed."
An empty shell.
That's all they saw me as.
An empty fucking shell.
"Of course." The man grinned widely at me. "I'll have him sorted in no time."
The writer nodded. "Good. I need them for the final presentation. If all goes well, we could have a good chance of getting Netflix and Amazon on board."
I didn't argue when I was violently dragged upstairs and locked inside what looked like the set for Katie's bedroom. The daffodil on the window-sill looked fresh. There was soil covering the carpet. When I lay on the floor, staring at the ceiling, I saw something at the corner of my eye.
Poking from under the bed was a phone.
It had been stood on. The screen was cracked. But it was usable.
When I powered it on, the only app was Reddit. The username was like a kick in the gut.
RobinAnonymous.
That's what the girl was talking about.
Unravelling the note the fan gave me, it was a printed out screen-shot of Robin's reddit page. Which I quickly found on the phone. Someone had circled the latest post with black marker pen: "POSTED LAST WEEK, AND DELETED STRAIGHT AWAY (OCTOBER 28TH)
The post itself simply said, "I BURIED HIM."
Robin's latest post must have been deleted by James, and then he disposed of the phone.
But what did her post mean?
What did Robin bury?
My head is fucking killing me, and I keep having nosebleeds. I'm sorry if this was rushed or made no sense; my eyes are fogging up and I'm tired. But I want to continue what Robin started, and get us all the hell out of here.
I don't know how much time I have, so please help me. Mac is broken, I think. But I don't know when those assholes are going to come and drag me downstairs.
