Science Games

Hello, I'm looking for games with specific features so any recommendations for games on PC would be much appreciated. What I'm seeking for are games that are related to universities or science.
I'm mostly interested in strategy games and 4x or simulation games particularly. I love being way ahead of technology in 4x games like Europa Universalis, Civilization or Stellaris. I love building science complexes for scientists in Anno 2070 and 2205. I love Kerbal Space Program because it's completely a science game. In Fallout 4, zombies or shooting are not important at all for me but the technology (mostly the advanced technology that was in the last part of the story) is fascinating, though I prefer beinga able to interact and build technologies instead. You get the main idea, I'm looking for "improving technology and science" kind of games. Renaissance, 1800-1900s or futuristic science/technology themes are especially great. Here are some games I played for reference:
Paradox Games (Especially EU, Victoria and Stellaris because of their tech systems) Civilization Series (The ability to go full science and have a huge gap of scientific advance is most thrilling) Most city builders (probably all of the well-known ones) Most RTS (especially those with "age-up" system, most notably Empire Earth series and Rise of Nations) Kerbal Space Program Automation games like Factorio, Satisfactory
I'm looking forward to hearing your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Looking for a base building/automation/optimization game like Factorio

Factorio hit the spot - anything else out there that's similar and nearly as good? I'm not too interested in Satisfactory at the moment, I like top-down view games for this type of genre.

Starting Eve Online in 2019- worth it?

So Eve caught my attention recently.
So seeing videos about it, it seems interesting. The economy, politics, wars, etc, sound really interesting, I've always wanted a sandbox MMO. I've also enjoyed automation games like factorio where you get things from raw materials to refined goods, so not suire if that would be relevant or not.
My main concern is that I'll be super behind. This is a very old and mature game, and I heard that supposedly advancing skills is time-gated. Since there have been players playing for over 15 years, is it even feasible for me to accomplish anything at this point? I feel like starting now, I would be like an ant relative to what players have built in 15 years, and that catching up is impossible. I'm guessing my only options are to join another nation and be a follower, and that starting anything would be infeasible due to how far behind I would be.
Realistically, what should I expect?

Hi, I have not played minecraft since I was a kid and now I recently started playing again. When I played the game years ago, i would build crappy houses an do typical stuff, but now im seeing a lot of people playing survival and doing automatic farms and all that kind of stuff. Im very interested in doing those kind of things since i like automation games like factorio, but i dont know anything about it. ¿What do you recommed to start? ¿Any youtube channels/videos? ¿Any wikis or something? Looking for a co-designer and a programmer for resource management game (C# Unity)

Good evening everyone!
I am here today to finally start development of a pet project that has been sitting in the "To-Do list" far too long.
Amazed and interested in resource management and automation games like Factorio and BigPharma, I have been designing my own spin on it, with brushed isometric art style. Huge emphasis on industrial automation and production. You can check the pitch here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zuetyhnvrp92cmk/Project%20Automata%20Pitch%20Document.pdf
Where you come in:
Designer: I have set up a good amount of documentation and ideas I have collected over these months, but need someone to help me bounce them off to. Making all the game on my own will lead to a very narrow-minded creative process that might not appeal many players. Experience as project manager or lead designer is preferred, so you can help me out fleshing the documentation (GDD, wikis, etc).
Programmer: Unfortunately I have reached a big wall regarding scripting, where I can no longer keep working alone. Therefore, I'm looking for a fellow developer to help me bring this concept to at least prototype stage. After that, got 2 art firms on standby to start filling my dropbox with art for the game. Would like you to stay after release as well, for patching and possible DLC.
I am asking is for someone committed and interested in this kind of games, with provable experience (several finished past projects). A minimum of 15 hours a week would be ideal.
I speak native English, Spanish and Italian, so do not let your cultural differences hold you back. Best if you live in Europe (time zones and all that). Here you can see some of my past projects: www.amochi-portfolio.com
Lastly, wanted to say that if you are interested in the project, do not feel afraid on me calling you one day and cancelling it. I have a lot of interest in making this game, and professional game design and production is my full-time job. I will not let your time and effort go to waste.
Bet you have questions, so hit me up via PM or skype (moontear84) to have a nice chat! When contacting me, please send me a link to your CV or portfolio, where I can see your past projects. Also, please check the mentioned games, to make sure we're on the same page.
Thanks for reading, hope to talk to you soon!
PS: I do not want a drone. I believe that videogames are emotional and personal, so I will value your voice and thoughts. Never, ever, be afraid of voicing your opinions. If you suggest something new or say directly that you disagree with something and back up your thoughts with logic, you become a keeper for me :)

A game that allows in-depth automation like Factorio but the focus of the game is not automation

Hey guys, I love being able to automate parts of games I play, making it feel like I've accomplished something. But I also really enjoy doing in-depth automation where I can automate very specific tasks.
I'm not looking for the same type of automation as Factorio, but just being able to automate things to that depth is very interesting to me.
I'd love to hear any of your suggestions!

Mods/tweaks to change the game's pacing to be like that of Factorio (automation in less than 5 minutes)?

One of the huge problems I have with modded Minecraft (more a problem with the base game) is how long it takes until you can actually get to planning out and building a factory. In Factorio, one of the first things you craft is a fuckin' automatic drill. The exponential rate of resource generation is MUCH steeper. Getting resources in Factorio isn't the goal, the goal is to handle mass production with all the resources that you're getting. All of Factorio's local transportation and auto-crafting is one-at-a-time.
Now, this post isn't about "Factorio is better" or anything (I've put 5000 hours into Minecraft at least), it's an entirely different beast with an entirely different modding scene (Lua API). Factorio is like those late 90s management games like Dungeon Keeper and Roller Coaster Tycoon. I definitely like Minecraft's range of options better with the magic, programming, etc so having the pacing of Factorio would be just heaven. In fact, Factorio was directly inspired by Minecraft mods like Industrialcraft and Buildcraft. Plus, 90% of these "advantages" are just balancing or already have clear solutions in modded Minecraft.
Eloraam's game actually seems to have a very similar motivation and design philosophy to Factorio, and may grow to be exactly what I am looking for in the future. If you are really interested in that, then you can help speed up development by becoming a patron.
What Factorio has that sets the pace (excluding things a mod/tweak can't really change):
Ideas of how Minecraft can match this pace:
I might also start looking into mods like Immersive Engineering.
TL;DR - I want to make resource gathering and crafting effortless from the start, so that the goal is managing it all, mass production, and making a badass factory.
TL;DR2 - In Factorio you are the most powerful machine, but over time the vast quantity of machines can slowly extend upon that. Minecraft is the opposite, with a lot of upgrades focused on you instead of the world, and having building up your personal power and resources be the entire early game.

Any games out there that are a mix of something like farming simulator (or mining, etc.) and kerbal space program (create your own machines) and factorio (automate everything)?

Just something I've been thinking of for a week or so.
Basically you create machines, efficient or not, over extravagant or simple, solar powered or gas guzzling, and set them to mine/till/farm/sort/create/separate/etc.?
Please tell me this exists in some form.

Looking for game where you can automate production like Factorio or Stardew Valley.

Hi guys.
I am looking for a sandboxy game where you can automate the production of goods with the purpose to progress easier in the game.
I am looking for a game where this is a major feature that you can customize, not like in Mount And Blade where you pay like 5000 gold for a mill or something and get some free or discounted resources every now and then.

New Factory Game: FOUNDRY ( Available now in Early Access on Itch.IO )

I want to share a new game with you that not a lot of people know about yet called FOUNDRY. It's a voxel factory game and I would characterize it as a mix between Factorio, Satisfactory, and FortressCraft Evolved. It's in Early Access but is very polished.
TLDR - Go to bottom of this message for the links! 😺
I've been playing this game for quite a while now, I'm up to like Episode 28 in my Let's Play series and I am still far from completing the tech tree or even building all the machines. It runs incredibly smooth for an Early Access game in my opinion and I've encountered no bugs in my time playing. Several of my YouTube viewers have gone on to purchase the game and participate in the discord. It's getting very high reviews from these early players.
Right now, the game is only available for purchase on Itch.IO. The developers have stated in their blog and on their discord that they intend to provide a Steam key for everyone who purchases the game on Itch.IO when the game eventually releases on Steam. They also state that they haven't worked out exactly how they are going to do it. If that's a concern for you, hop in the discord and ask about it. The devs have been very responsive on their.
They are about a week or two away from releasing a new build with some big enhancements and some new machines. But again, I'm already almost 30 episodes into my Let's Play and there's a ton of content in the game already. The development updates have been pretty steady and once you get a look at the game, I think you'll see they are pretty safe bet on finishing it. I truly think this is a game that can compete with the big boys (Factorio, Satisfactory, Dyson) by the time they are finished with it.
When I first learned of the game I asked the developers if they would provide me a press key so that I could try it out and feature it on my new YouTube channel. I had like 6 videos posted and only 2 subscribers at the time but they provided me a key anyway which I thought was very cool of them. Beyond getting the free press key, I'm not affiliated with the developers and don't receive a dime. Also, my channel is too small to be monetized.
There are currently no enemies in the game and the developer has said if/when they add enemies, they will have an option/setting to disable them if you wish.
Well, that should be enough to pique your interest. Here are some links where you can get more info:
Website: https://foundry-game.com/
Discord: http://discord.gg/eqvCtNH ( tell them Glidercat sent you! 😺 )
Itch.IO: https://meder-dynamics.itch.io/foundry
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/983870/FOUNDRY/
And finally here is a link to my "First Look" video for FOUNDRY. You can find my entire Let's Play series on my YouTube channel ( www.youtube.com/Glidercat )
https://youtu.be/FbcmO4yb3Uo
Please let me know what you think of the game. I have several other Factory/Automation games I've been researching for my channel that I hope to share with you here in the coming days and weeks.
If you have any unreleased factory games you've heard about or ones you think are underrated, please share them here or in the AutomationGames subreddit! There are so many of us Automation & Factory gamers out there, it would be cool if we could build a community outside of the single game subreddits/discords.

How do you deal with the frustrations of the game?

I've been coming back to Satisfactory on an off for a few months now, but honestly I'm finding it hard to keep invested with all of the little frustrating aspects of the game. The furthest I've gotten is automating some coal power, but ultimately just...there are so many little things getting in the way.
For one, there's power itself. you can't just have upgrading power be 'one of your tasks'. Either your power is sufficient and that's that, or it's not and you have to deal with it -immediately- because going even one watt below the needs shuts the -entire factory down-. With power being so restrictive I find it really difficult to actually get creative with the base designs. In other games power is just 'another bottleneck to improve', but here it's entirely binary.
Speaking of creativity, trying to get some kind of factory through-put working is...irksome. I'm coming off of many hours of Factorio/Fortresscraft experience, so there are hurdles in how Satisfactory handles expansion and organization that just don't seem to mesh with what I'm used to and I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I don't feel much of a push to use splitters and mergers given that most machines are already filling the conveyor completely right from the start. This is compounded by each mining location only allowing a single mine to be placed, so it feels like the same ratio of 'miner -> furnace -> 1-2 plate processing machines'. I took a look into the initial vehicles for transporting across long distances, but they each required (iirc) coal, but...I'm already using all of my available coal to power the coal power which is barely sustaining what (to me) feels like a very small base. Rather than feeling like I'm being encouraged to expand and build and make something grand, every step of the way it almost feels like the game is trying to have me make the smallest base possible that only makes -exactly- what it needs and nothing more. I get this feeling that 'you can either build your factory this one single way that works, or you can try to be creative and it'll work half as well'.
To sort of compare, in either of the other games I mentioned there's always that reason to expand. Automating production of something once opens the doors to automating it many times over to keep increasing output and always finding new bottlenecks, yet in Satisfactory all of those thoughts are interrupted by new thoughts of 'Yes but if you try and expand then you'll run out of power before you're halfway done and figuring out resources will be a nightmare', or thoughts of 'Sure you -could- think of some creative set-up, but you know it won't be as effective as just building one of every machine...again'.
I honestly wish I could just compartmentalize different aspects of factory building, but because of how the throughput and conveyors works that doesn't feel very possible. I feel as if one of the -first- buildings available for research should be some kind of storage that you can funnel resources into and out of in all manner of inputs and outputs. I love the idea of just 'I've made a resource hub to handle all the iron plates. I'm going to set up a row of mines and furnaces and have them all funnel into here, then I can pull them out elsewhere as needed, and add more mines and furnaces if that slows down'. Yet even at coal power the best I have is the storage with the same singular one-in-one-out, which is more of a buffer than any kind of proper automation/organization, and the splitters/mergers, which don't tend to be useful I find given that so much production is -already- filling the whole conveyor right away. It feels bizarre to me to be stuck on something as simple as 'I'd love to make more screws for these machines, but I may as well just... make screw-making machines directly adjacent to everything that needs it rather than making some kind of main bus or central storage of screws to go where it needs to'. Maybe I'm looking at them the wrong way or something, I don't know. I just don't like the idea of always solving 'get resources X to machine Y' by just 'building a new set of machines that make X directly next to machine Y', if that makes sense.
I think part of my issues is that most machines seem to -need- a full conveyor or close to that to begin with. I don't feel inclined to use a splitter since that just means I'll have two machines running at half speed, rather it'd be more efficient to just...build an entirely separate conveyor belt on top of the first to go into both machines, which then makes splitters and mergers feel entirely pointless. At first I figured 'Oh, maybe when I increase productions with slugs there'll be a reason to use splitters then with more output', until I realized you put slugs into -every- machine, which again just makes it more efficient to just have a single dedicated conveyor for every single individual machine. It gives me this rather dreadful feeling of a stagnant 'Just insert rod A into support B, and then do that again X times', rather than 'Here are the tools, now use them to create a whole variety of things!'. When I'd unlock a new recipe in Factorio or Fortresscraft, I'd think 'Oh neat, I can use my conveyors from here and here, maybe pull something off of there to get what I need over here to make this work', but in Satisfactory I'd look at the recipe and go 'Well, that needs X and Y...so I guess I'll just build -every machine- from the initial miner to the machine that makes X and Y to make this new thing.'. It feels like I have to make a whole new separate factory for -every- single item, with nothing really giving me an opening to connect it all together somewhere.
I don't know, that's just an example of the kinds of things I've been feeling. Usually I -love- automation games, I find them engaging and relaxing but with Satisfactory I just feel...endlessly frustrated and stressed, which really sucks because I've been really trying to get into the game. I've been eager to play it ever since I first heard of it years ago, and it's still a beautiful game to look at, but I can't get over the constant stress I feel trying to actually play it. It's like I'm trying to enjoy the game while it's actively fighting with me trying to make sure I won't. I'm not sure if anyone else had similar struggles, or if anyone found solutions to that.

Dyson Sphere Program, a massive scale Factorio like title for under $20 dollars.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1366540/Dyson_Sphere_Program/
I'm personally only coming up on an hour in this game but honestly I'm already madly in love with the systems and scaling of everything. The game might have flown slightly under the radar but it already has over 200 positive reviews after only being out for a few hours (as of this post).
Take a completely untouched planet and turn it into a sprawling working system before saying "off to the next planet" and making massive scale operations.
With having only an hour of time played I can't go too great into detail but wanted to make sure friends got to look at this neat game while it's fresh out of the creative oven.
Okay so just got home and ready to give some quick answers:
How complete is the game?
I mean it seems pretty complete at the moment and the videos/streamers I've seen playing it seem quite happy with the levels of content at the time but it's more for you, the player, to decide on how complete the game is overall. Going off of what the devs seem to think complete it's not there yet, plus its Early Access so... but hey get it if you have 20 dollars, you can always refund in 2 hours on Steam. :)
Mechanics?
Starting off, which I'm not too far into the game just yet, it's Planetary Annihilation mech time! You roam around harvesting resources, you research the means of automating your efforts, then you expand from there. Planets look like they can become giant sprawling industrial centers over time, then you begin working on inter-planetary movements and logistics, big projects, etc.
Worth 20 bucks?
I certainly think it is at the moment but as I said you've got the two hour refund window if you don't like it! :)
Buildables and tech trees?
The tech tree is quite sizable with branching paths you can hop into, each one has a decent bit of reading for details and flavor text, each item/buildable unlocked has more flavor text if you hover over it explaining what it does, how it does, etc. The tech tree also has a side menu just for upgrades that is also somewhat expansive. I personally am a sucker for long tech trees and to have all the extra text is great.
Buildables fall in the same line, you have so many options, everything can be automated. You aren't here to survive and get away like in Factorio you are here with a mission to help make a Dyson Sphere to generate energy for your home. That is a massive undertaking and you are just the foreman. Be ready to be the smallest thing on the screen!

First rocket launched! No game has captivated me quite like this in some time. Here’s a mini-review with some thoughts and tips.

On a very high level, this is a bit of a mashup between a city builder and a crafting/survival game. Maybe even throw a bit of real-time strategy in there too. I’m a fan of all three genres, so it makes sense I was drawn to Factorio.
The biggest thing this game gets right is that the high level of intricacy is met with a low level of urgency. And while speed and efficiency is a main focus of the game, there isn’t much punishment for slowing down.
Now, there isn’t zero urgency, as there is a balance of pollution and expansion with defense/offense against biters. It sounds like a lot of people on this sub play with biters off or attacks disabled, but I really liked them. City builders without any external threat and all the time in the world tend to lose my interest.
But for the most part, there is no big rush. Once you figure something out and get it automated it just hums along... until of course you’re unhappy with its speed and want to expand or replace it. It’s a game where you have “a lot of plates spinning at once”, but for the most part they never come crashing down. They just slow down, or are suddenly too slow compared to the rest, and you speed them up how you see fit.
It’s game of finding a problem, figuring it out, getting a nice little endorphin boost, moving on to the next problem, and occasionally murdering some insects who were trying to avenge the trees you also murdered.
The design also turns a potentially frustrating aspect into a charming one: the player character. When a game is all about building a city/system it often doesn’t use a physical player character. You just are some sort of god with a top-down view of your territory. Having a player that needs to travel places and bring objects from point A to point B is just adding tedium. But Factorio just turns the limitations of your character into yet another problem to solve and optimize. By the end of the game you feel like a robot god that can make structures appear and disappear on a whim.
Overall I just really have nothing but good stuff to say about this game. I would recommend any new player reading this take advantage of the wiki and this subreddit. There were some very basic questions I had answered here that would have really stumped me. But avoid walkthroughs, instructional videos, and pre-made blueprints. The fun of playing the first time is figuring out your own little designs.
